;D Out of curiosity, does it hurt the Degus to chew the plastic top rim of a fish tank? Our guys are housed in a 20 gallon tank (topper cage en route) and they are chewing their way around the rim. They can't escape this way, but we are concerned that what they are chewing is harmful. Any suggestions on how to stop this? And yes, they have lots of chew toys, wood, etc. to keep them busy. Thanks for any help.

all degus chew, you will never stop this, nor should you try as they need to do this to keep their teeth trimmed. It shouldnt hurt them to do it, but offer different pieces of wood as a more interesting alternative.
hope this helps :-)

they have lots to chew, guess this is just one of their favorites. thanks for the help. I am very new to Degus, but they are so fascinating! Have had them one week today and couldn't imagine not having them for pets. your forum and website is so informative and helpful, I think I would be lost without it, not much info on Degus here in the states. please keep this site going, I love it!

Degus are indeed interesting and I too am new to degus, having found out about them a year ago. My degus are also tanked in aquarium and they chew the black lining around at the top. I was also concerned but figured it wouldn't hurt them as I offer lots of wood and such for them to chew in their habitat. It's not a big problem I see. It is very hard to find degu information but this forum is amazing for quick answers! Also check out degus.org (not updated anymore), www.myhomezone.co.uk/degus/and www.degutopia.co.uk/The three sites I use the most.

thanks Furik, i have both these site bookmarked. glad to know my gooeys are not the only ones eating their home. last night i put some twisted paper towels in the tank and the tug of war began. too funny. then just to keep them busy i put one of the towels through the hole in their wooden playground and it kept them busy for about 1/2 hour or so trying to pull the towel out. and this is where they proved how intelligent they are--they chewed the towel closest to the hole so it became easier to cart off and stuff into their nest. the entertainment they provide is just hilarious. love them more everyday.
