Hi,
A simple question with a multitude of answers I am guessing. We have a Hazel tree in our garden is it safe to cut small branches off, wash them and drop them straight in the cage for our Degus? The branches aren't sappy but are still a little bit sticky inside

Hello Gareth!! Welcome back!!
You can pop them in your range and set the heat to it's lowest setting, maybe about 80 - 100 C and let the branches just have a long slow dry in there. You don't want to give them wet things that might begin to mildew or mold . . . but drying them in this manner will work well!

Just avoid or scrape off any large amounts of resin or sap. If you choose clean, fresh growth no need to wash or bake or do anything at all and they get all the benefit of the fresh leaves to eat. I only ever cleaned off bird poo or lichen/ algae and it's very tedious so I would avoid that if you can.

Thanks very much for the replies, the sticks are laying in the sun after a wash, they were very clean. Extra bonus picture of Terry holding a die which he found under a piece of furniture and refused to let go of. It is made of ivory I think and he was intent on destroying it had quite the job getting it back

I was thinking the same, Moletteuk! Our degus always had a major treasure stash, and than a couple of sneaky little ones on the sides. LOL!

Update... After hand washing and drying in the sun our Degus have a massive amount of indifference to them Terry has discovered his purpose in life though as a mobile duster, he keeps appearing covered in dust and cobwebs looking pleased with himself. Also I have found one stash of sticks under a radiator

Well, I'm surprised, but I suppose as Savvy says, that's what degus are all about. Maybe they will change their minds and devour them one day if you leave them in. Glad Terry has found a purpose in life that pleases him and you

We should do, we could get them a little van, Binky can drive it. Have we just crossed over into Richard Scary?
