As some of you will know I have just bought three 8 week old female degus. I was told they were definitely all female. One of them seems to be trying to mount the others! Is this normal? Could it be a dominance thing? It only seems to happen when they are all having fun together. I haven't been able to pick them up yet as they are still a little timid. (I would know how to sex them if I was able to look). Please can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

I was just talking to Aimeelou about that today. I just added a 5 month old baby to my 6 older girls and Sunny keeps trying to mount the babe!
Aimee said that was normal and it is a dominance thing. She said all is well unless there is major scuffle or bloodshed.
I hope that helps ;D

Yeah, my two girls (8 weeks old) do the same thing, and nothing ever amounts from it.

The mounting is normal dominance behaviour between same sexed Degus. I would want to sex them for myself just to be certain though. I was assured I bought a male Degu who about six weeks after bringing "him" home, gave birth to eight Degu puppies!!! It is easy to make a mistake when separating the boys from the girls and around here, the pet shops are very uneducated regarding these things.
