Got my three baby degus on Saturday! Cookie, Nutmeg and Ginger. They are 8 weeks old. At the moment they seem very timid when I approach their cage . Is there a proved method of getting them hand tame? I've heard if you give them a treat they will trust you? Look forward to any suggestions! Thanks!

Hi there, On page two of the degu behavior thread there is a post called hand friendly. It has a few suggestions in there on how to get your babies used to you.
I hope that helps a bit for starters anyway.

Thank you for the advice. I've rubbed my hands in their dust bath and have put my hand in their cage for a few minutes at a time. They have started to nibble at my fingers! One of them has taken a piece of food from my hands. Looking hopeful! Keep you posted.

I lucked out with mine, apprently the breeder they came from handles the babies regularly. Mine were 6 weeks old and would only shy away if you tried to grab at them. Other than that they didnt mind people or hands at all.
