I lost a degu last xmas from this mysterious disease and got two more degus, who were sisters, to replace her so that the one remaining had a companion.
On new years eve I lost one of these sisters to the same disease. Again I was up all night trying to get fluids into her but to no avail.
Last Saturday, the two remaining degus, who are both about two years old, started to fight and blood was drawn so I had to seperate them.
I took them both to the vets and the vet(who specialises in small animals and has an interest in degus) who says that he can not understand why this has happened.
I thought that the genitals of the one that I have had the longest, were swollen and maybe she was on heat and this is what was causing the problem. The vet looked on the internet, phoned me back and said that he didn't think that they were swollen and that she looked similar to the genitals shown on the web.
I keep trying to put them back together again and the newer one keeps smelling around the genital area of the other. The first one gets irritable. The newer one then trys to domineer the other by getting on her back and holds on while the other trys to shake it off. They then end up making a lot of noise and fighting again. They have drawn blood on each other three times now.
The first one doesn't seem to care a lot about being alone, although tonight she was making a pining noise whilst laying in her bed. The newer one seems to be very lonely and depressed and throws its food bowl over and kicks things out of her way.
I am wondering what I can do and would like very much to get them back together again as I know that they are better with companionship. Should I get another degu to introduce to the newer one and then try putting all three in together?? Please Help as I really am at a loss as to what to do. I am feeling very frustrated that this has happened and really don't know what to do.
