How odd! Mine both love their dust bath. A little worrisome isn't it?

Hi Phoenix,
Have you had a close look at Pickle's skin? I'm just guessing but maybe his skin is itchy or something making it uncomfortable to dust bathe?
Do let us know if there's any change.
Good luck.

I just given pickle a good going over as suggested and i cant see anything that could be irritating, (apart from me ) his skin, theres no mites, no dry flakey skin, & no sores, so shall i keep persivering with rubbing sand into his fur untill he gets the message that this is what he should be doing i don't want sam to follow him & stop bathing, by getting the immpression that its like a roman bath, where women come and give you a rub down every now and then, if you lay back & wait long enough ;D seriously though any suggestions?

Heh heh .... Lucky Pickles! He's found a new way to get a 'bathing' ! Seriously though, I am glad there was no problem with his skin. I am fascinated by his refusal to dust bathe. I wonder if dustbathing is an instinctive behaviour or whether it is learned through observation of adult degu's while young? Out of curiosity, does he seem to enjoy, or not, being rubbed with sand? no he not keen on being rubbed with sand either, i have changed the brand of sand many times, he just runs. the one thing you mentioned was the behaviour of his elders when young, i got him and his brother from someone who thought they bought 3 sisters (garden centre) and they bred, he kept them in a outside avery with about 5 generations mixed in together, how i bit my tounge i will never know. anyway i bought two from one of the 1st litters, as i thought the health risks were not gonna be so high, breedback ect, unfortunately branston didn't live very long, and now you mention it i dont recall seeing a dust bath in there at all. do you think that this behaviour could be due to bad breeding & he might have a neurological problem
