My new degu, Foster, is very tame acting. Despite his very young age (probably not more than a month or two old), he loves to be petted and he seems pretty content with his enviroment.
In his pretty larger cage, he has the normal bedding, water bottle, food dish, wheel, cardboard play-toys and so on. However, one thing this lil guy does puzzles me.
Now, I know degus love to bite on things and I know he really shouldn't be biting on the top of the cage. I put a cage top over his cage. Every day, he starts biting at it and I know it's probably not good for him. I've tried to put things over it instead to stop him but he still does it. I would've thought since I put cardboard things in his cage, maybe that would stop him but it doesn't.
Eventually he does stop and continues to play around in his cage but at least once a day he starts biting at the top of his cage.
Am I doing something wrong here? Can someone help me out?
Much thanks

My two girls seem to be well established and happy together. They have all kinds of things to chew on and yet they persist in chewing on the bars of their cage as well as the food dishes and ramps!! I doubt that there is anything wrong with your new Degu sounds pretty normal to me!

Hi. I've had my 3 degus for about a month now. They are only 3 months old. They also bite on the cage! Must be a thing they like to do! I don't think it will harm them.

One of ours also bites the cage and scratches away at plastic floor(shelf) next to where he bites the bars. Quite amusing really
