Ours were actively, and slyly, reconnoitering. Any stray sock, necklace, feather, shoelace, ring, bookmark, tissue, school assignment, hairband, pen or pencil, even the queen sized comforter on the bed (Increasingly accompanied by much blue swearing and a massive frustration difficult to contain in such a small body, stretching into days of repeated effort, so significantly increasing in determination that the glint of looming madness was visible as he made direct eye contact with said comforter while waiting to be let out each night.), were fair game for thievery if they were left unattended, and would be shoved or dragged under the chest of drawers into the far back corner, joining all other hoisted bits of shiny trinkets in the treasure cove. Me . . . I watched just to see what he would tackle next!! Only one was so thoroughly involved in treasure hunting. The others didn't quite get the whole idea and were guilty of plundering the treasure cove and then leaving the things they pulled out right in the middle of the room. This brought out quite a brilliant rage upon discovery and then return of the item to it's "hidden" location. If you are familiar with the Narnia books, you might know the name Reepicheep . . . after which our treasure hunting degu was named.

My degus start to chew after 1 hour running ( in the bedroom) if the moldings where not covered.. after i covered them.. it stoped.. But they usually want to go back into the cage after one hour.. They love it best when they have the opportunity to go back in the cage... So i have fixed a playpen - which i also use , it is connected to the cage.. so that they can go out and in as they please.. But they will not be as much out..if they have access to cage... So that's why i also have them in the bedroom for 1hr too.. I use this homemade - cardboard playpen, they don't bother chewing on it..when it is connected to the cage..... if the cage is not connected they don't want to be in it for long .....i notice.. since when i first had them there.. ..they would try to dig under and chew.. they didn't like to be there if..they couldn't go back into the cage... so when i connected the cage.. they no longer bother to try to "escape"..and will go out and in often.. I notice that degus like to have clear wiew of the room(surroundings).. the cardboard..cover much of it.. and that was probably why they didn't like to be in there if they couldn't go back in the cage... with the cage connected.. they loves it..
