Poor Dad! Follows his instincts, and ends up in solitary for it.

Hi sorry not been on here for a while it’s been pretty hectic here! update on babies is that they are all doing fine and growing fast, we are handling them loads. They are so funny to watch. I am still waiting for my new cage from pets at home, my store has told me it shouldn’t be a problem but they need authorisation from higher up as it’s over £100. I have asked if I can get the same cage that I already have (cosypet RC03) and they said it’s my choice as to what cage I have (I was thinking it would be easier to join them together if both the same) my daughter thinks we are keeping all 11 degus! She is saving up to buy them so I can’t rehome them 😁 ( how many degus would comfortably fit in two of them cages?) we are going the vets next week to have babies sexed and to see if either adult female is pregnant. Dave is doing good too, his scars are healing fine and he’s back to running on his wheel. What age do the babies have to be before I can put a wheel in their cage? Also when can I put a sand bath back in permanently? Sorry so many questions

So they're about 2 weeks old now? If they can all safely and competently climb in and out of the sandbath, so there's no chance someone gets stuck in there because they can't climb back out, the sandbath can go back.
Don't give Dad a sandbath until you are sure his incisions are completely closed and the skin is good. If his skin is now sound and intact, then he can have a sandbath back.
Not sure about the wheel, will let others advise. The worst problem with babies and wheels is that, since they are smaller than an adult, a baby can squeeze in behind or under the wheel, then if someone else starts running on it, horrible things happen to the one squeezed in behind. If you are giving them supervised out of cage time, so that the wheel would sit on its own out in the middle of the floor, you might try letting them explore it--but stay right there with it so if someone is underneath it no one else starts to set it turning.

Thanks winic1 will let them have a go in the sand bath and see if they can get in and out and will try the wheel too, we can only get them out like three at a time (one for each of us) as they split up and go in opposite directions! 😁 could you view the photos? Not sure what I did wrong but last time I posted photos they appeared on the forum not open up in a separate page.... I’m so confused as to how it can really be that difficult 🤷♀️

For two RC03 cages (based off them being 90x60cm) you're looking at a CARA of 32,400 with all four half shelves in. If you could make one shelf full length and the other half length of the cage you're looking at 37,800. For the unmodded version I probably would say 6 degus, modded 7 possibly 8 at a push? That's without checking the charts though... Can't wait to see pics (and can't blame your daughter for wanting to keep them all) easiest option is to use something like postimages.org, upload them and click the share symbol (3 dots joined together as a triangle with a side missing) and copy the thumbnail for forums link to paste onto here.

ntg please help, why is it not posting direct onto here? Last time you told me to use post images.org, upload photos, select hotlink for forums then I push the copy button next to the ‘link to this gallery’ box (is this right so far?) then when I come back into this forum what do I do? Do I push the little world symbol with the paper in front of it? (9th button from right above) (this is what I did and copied link into the url box but maybe this is wrong?)

I think the last gallery link is fine now, I can see all the baby pics on post image To use the link from Postimage you push the copy button on Postimage as you describe ('hotlink for forums' to display an individual picure or 'link to this gallery' seems suitable for your group of images today). When you get to the forum you just right click in the reply box and the option to paste the link you just copied will come up, so just paste direct into the normal text area of your reply, you don't need any of the forum link or image buttons at all. Let me know if that's not clear. (What you did with the link button (9th button) is create a hotlink to the gallery, which you did correctly, it just looks like the gallery on postimage is not set up correctly or you selected the wrong gallery - the link takes us to a gallery which appears to just have the one picture in it of an adult degu? so looks like you clicked the link on PI of the wrong gallery?)

Thanks moletteuk that makes sense and glad you can see them. Not sure how I got them straight onto here last time, but as long as it works that’s good thanks again

No problem. Babies look like they are coming along well Our charts don't go above 6 degus because it's so unusual, but if we allow 4000 sqcm extra per each extra degu then based on our minimum required sizing and based on ntg's numbers then the two cages together without mods should take 7 and with mods 8 degus.

Oh my word they're gorgeous! It's making me broody for more degus Sherlock wouldn't be a good cage mate for babies though

Thanks everyone for your help, have just put sandbath in with babies an they can get in an out no probs. They have started eating food now and we have seen a couple of them drinking out of the water bottle (not sure which ones if I’m honest) but at least they are learning. They are doing really well and are soooo quick

Do you have, or have you made, a safe playpen for out of cage time? That helps greatly with making sure no one gets away. Many members here have made them, so I'm sure someone can guide you to some good designs.
I can see all of the pictures you posted by clicking them.
