Bought some of this for the rabbits & guinea pigs. It says on the packet it's for chins & degus too, what do you guys think? I don't like that it has fruit in but I don't know enough about nutrition to be sure. www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/snacks_supplements/mixes/other_snack_mixes/722368Ingredients Vegetable by-products, vegetables (10% peas, 5% chicory, 4% beetroot), fruits (9% carob), vegetable protein extract, seeds, minerals, FOS, oils and fats, calendula, MOS, algae, yucca. Additives Nutritional additives per kg: Vitamin A (17740 IU), vitamin D3 (2130 IU), vitamin E (140mg), vitamin C (132mg), 3b103 [iron] (177mg), 3b202 [iodine] (3mg), E4 [copper] (17mg), 3b502 [manganese] (133mg), 3b603 [zinc] (124mg), E8 [selenium] (0.35mg).

It's not ideal for degus, I'd say very small amounts only. Possibly useful for oldies (with no cataracts or diabetes issues). Carob is really sweet but they put it in because it's really high in calcium so for little people with no sugar issue it is good nutritionally.

Just wondering what "vegetable by-products" are? Meat by-products are scraps that can't be sold unless they are crushed beyond recognition and mixed with flavor and other things to fool people into thinking it is actually food. So, are vegetable by-products things like skins, cut off tops, roots, leaves and shoots that people don't like to eat? Also . . . vegetable protein extra sounds a little like the . . . hmmm . . . maybe they call it hydrolyzed soy protein that can be a meat substitute, something I used to buy when I was trying to learn how to eat vegetarian, before I learned just how many wonderful veggie dishes there are to make and enjoy. (AND then the meat eaters in the house revolted and my vegetarian days were ended.)
I have seen ingredients like these in chin, guinea pig, and degu foods over here, and they always made me feel uncomfortable.

Thanks guys, appreciate the replies. I honestly don't think the degus or chins need this stuff, they have a lot of variety & won't miss it. I'll just stick to the original plan to use it for guinea pigs & rabbits. They seem to LOVE it, so I'm going to use it for special occasions & training. It's mostly 2 types of nuggets with fewer chunks of what I presume is the carob & veg/fruits, so I could pick out those bits if I need to.

It's always wonderful to find something that is appropriate for the animal and that they love! It's great that both the guinea pigs and rabbits love it and it is OK for them for treats and training. Hmmm . . . what kind of training do you want to do?

Thinking of working with Jim a bit, see if he wants to do any tricks or agility. He's pretty bored & he's bright so he could do it if he wants. He'll probably do it his own way if I know him, but either way it's stimulation. & bribery is always good for getting Zak to be nice It might work for getting the piggies to let me clip nails or bath Bea too Never thought about training piggies, they don't seem overly trainable for tricks or such, but I've never looked into it. Guess i'll be on YouTube watching guinea pig do tricks for most of this week (wheek!)

I remember my guinea Ellis, I would put him on the settea and then he would climb up the cushion so he was on top and wheek wheek as if to say 'how good am I. The timing was great one day as my brother walked in and didn't know we had Ellis and as he climbed up the settea and boasted of his accomplishment with a wheek wheek my brother fell back in shock against the living room wall with a look of 'WTF on his face. I was only about 19 or 20 but I remember it so well. Even after he had been fed, as soon as he heard the fridge door open he would do that sound. It is so loud. Such lovely animals. My OH doesn't value them as he tells me that they don't compare to degu's but I tell him that they shouldn't be compared, just loved for their own uniqueness. I would adopt some tomorrow if he agreed!
