Can degu eat walnut in shell ? - Not something i will would give them often if so.. maybe 1-2times a year ( they're pretty big) Maybe i could find a way to remove the nut inside and only have small piece inside instead? I let my degu play with them, but remove them once i see they have made a hole in it.. I haven't let them eat it..in fear of it being too much fat..considering the size of the nut compared to the degu.

They can have around 1 nut a month, but I tend to switch between walnuts, hazelnut, almonds and pecans in shell. I'm honestly surprised they allow you to take them away, one of my lads would kill me if I went anywhere near him when he has one, particularly a walnut

I distract them with something they love more ( dried flower)..and then take the nut w/o they knowing

Do let them have the whole nut if you are giving them only very occasionally, like once a month as NTG says. They are a much loved treat, and they can certainly safely have and eat them on the monthly basis.

Mine love a nut in a shell! Pecans and hazelnuts are favourites of mine. They either immediately go into a corner and demolish it straight away, or bury it in plain sight, and forget where they put it!

I . . . mostly loved the sound of a degu crunching through a nut shell. However, there were a few occasions where the shell must have been a little harder than normal, because it would begin to sound like nails on a chalk board. SHIVVVER!!! Nails on chalk boards don't usually bother me, but there is an occasional tone achieved that would make my spine crawl . . . and our goos occasionally achieved that same tone. That's when the hammer would come out and the nut was swiftly "helped" to open. LOL

Sounds like fun for them to, like a puzzle trying to break the shell open to devour the treat inside, might have to buy some for my lot.

Would it be 1 nut per degu? Or just one nut between them?
I've 2 goos

One nut per degu. But use some thought about it as well. Some nuts in shells are very small, while others are very large. So . . . depending on the nuts you have, if it is small like a hazelnut or an almond . . . sure, one per degu. If they are all mammoth walnuts, pecans, or brazil nuts, then maybe break them in half.

Always fairly distributed or else you will have world war 3 on your hands.

And have a look at the shell afterwards - I've found empty shells with such a small hole, I honestly can't figure out how they got the nut out of it!

I have many times found that with shells opened by our degus as well, Bouncy. I have even hung around to try and find out what/how they do it . . . but they wouldn't perform for me, LOL!
Must be a very high value degu secret!
