I have a high pain tolerance, and add that to a jazz bassist's hand (thick callouses on most of my fingertips), a degu's nibbling won't bug me much at all. However, should I discourage it if Nausicaä is doing it so hard, so she doesn't do it as hard on my girlfriend's hands, or will she know to do it to her softer? She already drew blood on Jenn's fingers, but that was before she was nibbling on mine. Jenn doesn't seem to be bugged by the nibbling anymore, but I would hate to have Nausicaä nibble on mine and then hurt Jenn over and over because of this.

My Husband is a builder and has hard skin on his hands, and a little on his elbows, and mine tend to nibble his hard skin! I think because its harder than normal skin they have to give it a try!

I found that once degus come to understand what people are and that you aren't dangerous or food they mostly stop with any biting or really rough nibbling. If it doesn't hurt you though they won't know what's too rough. After you jerk back from too hard of a bite they don't really do it again unless they are scared or you try to take their food away. You also can't really discipline them. They didn't understand any of our attempts to do so. About all that works is pulling your hand back when they get rough and refusing to give them a treat or putting them back in the cage when they misbehave.

Don't forget to squeek at them loudly as well.....so instead of saying ''Sh*t'' when it hurts, squeek at them...then you are talking to them in their language!!!

That's a little hard with a deep baritone voice. My girlfriend can use that, but what I would do wouldn't come out as a squeak.
