Heyy! So i have 2 degus, i got them 3 months ago and i know a lot about them but i wanna make sure that everything i give them is alright. Soo, for the food, they get everyday 1 tablespoon of "Versele-laga complete chinchilla°u (herbs+timothy)" food and 1 tablespoon of "Versele-Laga degu nature" (Versele-Laga is the best brand i can find in the petshops near me). They have separate bowls so i think they are getting approximately 20 grams of food each everyday. As treats, i give them 1-2 pumpkin seeds 2-3 times a week and sometimes i hide sunflower seeds around their cage. Of course they have hay (timothy) everyday and water is unlimited. I kinda give them a lot of puffed rice because i use this for training and i want to teach them some tricks. After i clean their cage i give them either "VITAKRAFT carrot drops" or "Versele-Laga complete crock" with apple flavor (both with no sugar added). I one gave them a walnut. I saw somewhere that you can give them dried corn every month so that's what i'm doing. That's it sorry for any mistakes, english is not my first language. If you know other treats they can have please tell me and if something that i give them isn't healthy for them i'll stop right away. Thankss!

Hello, Annanatya, and welcome to the forum! Have you done any reading in our diet and nutrition section? We have TONS of information there, and it can be rather overwhelming, but it is also very helpful. Here is a good start . . . deguworld.proboards.com/thread/16425/degu-feeding-guideThere are all kinds of threads in that board that are permanently featured in the top positions on the page, I encourage you to read through them. PLEASE be totally free to ask any questions, and to discuss things as you go.

Welcome! I can only echo what deguconvert has said! There are so many different commercial feeds out there with pros and cons, as well as more natural diets. Have a good read of the information so you can make an informed decision based on what you can get hold of in your area. Don't forget online shops, which are often cheaper and can offer a wider range. You will find a real mix amongst members on here, with feed being pellets and hay to 100% natural, dried and fresh. Degus, as a general rule, don't tend to overeat, so don't be afraid to see there's always some food in their bowl.

The main thing you are missing is forage. Degus need to eat large quantities of plant matter such as herbs, tree leaves, meadow and hedgerow plants, flowers, safe garden plants, alfalfa, various grasses etc etc. They can have it fresh or dried and you can buy it or collect it yourself. They also do well with some high calcium oil seeds in their diet such as nigella, fennel, cumin, coriander, sesame and a few other oil seeds such as linseed and milk thistle. Generally with diet you need to keep the fibre as high as possible, the carbs as low as possible the calicum high and the phosphorus low. The other related thing is that they need an artificial supply of vitamin D either as a food additive or in the forum of a UV lamp which allows them to make their own vitamin D.
