OK, got my new degus yesterday Fred an Lamont , they were named when I got them, when I met the girl I adopted them from ,Lamont (the son) was quite willing to let me handle him, and was actually very nice about it, meanwhile Fred scurried around the cage and just preferred to be left alone.
So we came home yesterday, and I assembled my big new cage, well almost all of it, so got it together as best I could and when hubby came home , we had to put rest of it together, I didn't want to bother the guys too much as all of this was quite new to them, but I did try a few times to catch Lamont, so I could show my husband that he was pretty decent about handling, well he wanted nothing to do with it, I left my hand in cage for several minutes, to let them , come to me,,now they would take all the scratching I would offer , but that was about it. So I thought OK, I will just leave them for a while. So I decided to put there dust bowl in to let them bathe, thought that might help them adjust a little better, while it was in there, I remembered girl telling me that the girl who had had them before, used a small plastic cup to get them out of tank when she cleaned, I guess she just kind of scooped them up in it, so while I had bowl in cage, Lamont, had climbed in and bathed, when he was finished he was just kind of setting there, so I opened the door, he is still there, then I reached for bowl, he still sat there, so I picked up bowl and all, and he still sat there, when I had bowl away from cage, I simply scooped him out with my hands, and out he came, and was quite content to set with me for several minutes, he never bit nipped or tried to get away, he sat with me for about 10 minutes then I decided to let him back in cage, did not want to rush anything, OK, so I was just wondering anybody else's degus have any weird behaviors like that, I am still working on them coming into my hand, but in the mean time if I can successfully use this method, i guess I will, I suppose that is all those guys know of being handled, so that is what they are most comfortable with , I am gonna go to grocery today and get some broccoli, to try and make friends rather speedily. sorry to make such a long story, but hope you all enjoy reading!!! thanks steph, I hope to get pics on today, but while I am at store, I need batteries for camera, too
