Hi I am hopefully getting some degu's quite soon but first want to get as much research in as possible so I have a few questions which I haven't found answers to in my books. 1.Should I have 2 girls or 2 boys? 2.What vegetable can they eat? 3.Are they easy to tame? 4.Is this a suitable enclosure? i22.ebayimg.com/04/i/06/c5/d1/a9_2.JPG (It is all metal and no wire flooring) I would be really grateful if you could answer these questions Thank you Emma x

Hello Emma! :-)
You can have either boys or girls, as you mentioned, always have at least 2 as they love company. I have a boy (neutered) and two girls and they get on really well.
Vegetables..... well, there's a LOT of debate about what they can have! I give mine broccoli, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, dandelions and cucumber.
In terms of being easy to tame, well, mine are rescues and they are very tame. They are not cuddly pets, they don't like to be picked up but they climb and play on me and groom me affectionately. If you get rescues that have been handled or babies you should be ok. Pet shop degus are often not well handled so are not always as easy to tame, but obviously this varies a great deal. Whereabouts in England are you based?
The cage you mentioned would be perfect for degus! I would paint the wooden shelves with Japlac (non-toxic paint) - at least two coats as this will make it much easier to clean. I'd put a hammock in half-way to prevent any long drops too.
Hope this helps! Please feel free to keep asking questions!

I am based in the north east of England. The pet shop I saw them at the woman doesn't handle them coz she worried they will jump and escape put the shop but she puts her hand in the enclosure to stroke them and she let me put my hand in and they both climbed onto my hand and started grooming me - it was so sweet!
Would a rat or ferret sized hammock be better?
Thank you

WOW! i only WISH i had a cage like that! your degus will love it - you can also get leap-n-ledges and sleep-n-ledges to give them extra places to jump and sit along the height of the cage.

I'd recommend the sleep n' ledeges rather than the leap n' ledges for that particular cage as the sleep ones have two bolts and so put less stress on the bars. The leap n' ledges have only one bolt and can 'sprag' the bars a bit.

I have cages like that, they are great. I have attached cardboard tubes to the sides with curtain wireas well as shelves and try the HammockyHammocks website. They are much nicer than the rat hammocks plus proceeeds go towards Chinchilla Rescue. Sorry, can't do a link but if you just type in the name it will come up. Lyndy
