Seeing as I now have 11 babies, I need advice on how to get them hand friendly. The older ones (about 6 weeks old) already don't like being touched or picked up. I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on how to tame degus (especially at a young age) and make them enjoy being touched and picked up.

I sat for up to an hour at a time with my hand resting palm up in the cage with Mocha's babies. I would try my darndest to sit perfectly still - not reacting to their little "taste tests"! Eventually all eight would form a Degu Pile-up to take their nap! That was so precious. As they became used to my hand I would gently close my hand around whoever happened to sit in my palm and take them out for a short while. They were all pretty good about it.

I can still pick them up and they don't squirm as bad as Princess would. They will eventually calm down in my hands but the new babies, for some reason won't come near my hands at all.

Try rolling your hand in the used bath dust. That will scent you like one of them.

I'm sure deguqueen has tamed her clan by now. Here's another tactic that's worked for me. In the morning, when I feed my degus I put some of their food on my hand and let them eat out of my hand for 5 minutes before filling their bowls. Both my babies and adults are now "eating out of the palm of my hands" (literally). Now when I come anywhere near their cages they all come running to greet me and "the hand". Until recently, my adults were less than tame. Thanks to the advice on these forums they're coming around!

The "baby" babies are just little demons. I don't know how such a sweet girl like Gizmo could give birth to such evil terrorists. I even named one of them Cujo because he bites everybody all the time. I've been bit by him twice already. They fight with eachother, squeel, steal from eachother, slap eachother, bite eachother, rape eachother and so much more. The other two cages are so nice and this one..... I definitely have my hands full and my work cut out for me with these holy little terrors. I have a feeling it could be because I seperated them from their mom early because she was sick but I have never come across a group of degus that were just as nasty as these ones. With everything going on lately, losing 5 pets in 6 weeks, I haven't really had the time to properly work with them on their socialization and "hand taming". I am going to do it though, I'm pretty determined about it.

Hang in there, Deguqueen.
Are all of the babies together or have you got them separated by gender already?
