i was wondering if the females are more affectionate and stuff than the males, like many other animals? im deciding on which sex to get and im leaning toward females since they tend not to be as messy about their pottying as the males. any opinions on these issues? thanks.

It is pretty hard to say which is more affectionate. Each degu has a definite personality. I got to hand raise a litter of 4 boys and 4 girls from birth. The boys seemed to be more "adventurous" being the first to venture out and explore things and to get into more mischief. The girls seemed to be more "laid back" but could definitely give the boys a run for their money when it came to mischief. The girls were also the first to figure out when I was about to open the cage and would be waiting at the door for their treat! Whichever gender you go with will be a joy to watch and if you treat them gently and with affection they will return it.
As for their potty habits, I could see no difference. Boys and girls both seemed to like to pee off the top shelf.

There tends to be less squabbling between females. The boys have that testosterone thing going.

I would recommend getting females, as long as they are litter mates. I keep males, but this is only because I have them in pairs of brothers of different ages, adding two at a time to the mix of 4 (does that make sense?) Anyway, when males reach about 9 months of age, the testostrone kicks in. sometimes this just results in a change of dominance, but I have had a case where the younger male had to be removed permanently. Boy can a degu hold a grudge!!! Females, although they reach puberty do not fight as much for dominance, so they are safer bet.
I should also add, I am really REALLY pleased to see a sensible degu owner getting ONE sex, and not planning on breeding them! well done!!
