I have a pair of 10 week old female degus' and would like to introduce a 3rd one which would also be female and around the same age. i am fairly certain they are not litter mates but i am wondering if their young ages and the fact that i have only had these two for 4 days now make the introduction a little easier as they have not yet fully established a hierarchy. one of my main concerns is that i would only have 2 full days to keep an eye on their behaviour before having to go back to work full days (i am home for my lunch and every evening but out of the house 8hours during the day 5 days a week). any advice would me much appreciated!

Have a read through this . . . deguworld.proboards.com/thread/17618/introductions-fighting-quick-guide . . . because even though they are quite young, they are not so young that they will immediately bond with a new degu. They are nearly three months of age, which seems pretty young but they are halfway to the typical start of adolescent angst and domination fighting, and sometimes you already see signs of that at their age. So . . . reading through that will be helpful no matter what, but beyond that you need to know that introductions are seldom swift or easy when it comes to degus. It could go well now, potentially yes, which would be great! It can also fall to pieces once they are into their adolescent stage. The vast majority of introductions take lots of time (read months) and lots and lots of patience. Also, three degus need a lot more space than you may realize. I'm going to link you to our forum cage size recommendations . . . deguworld.proboards.com/thread/9396/forums-cage-size-recommendations . . . which are really important and help our members to give their animals the surface/living space they need to be healthy and happy. Fighting is often increased in frequency and intensity when they are living in a space that is too confined and has little surface area for running and living on. With this in mind, you may need to upgrade your housing. You may need to have a second cage on hand for introductions (assuming you only have one at the moment, you will need a second), which could be used as an addition to whatever you currently have. What is your cage . . . do you have the Thickets from P@H?
