I would love any ideas on veggies, herb and flowers that would add to their food. I am giving them apple and peach tree sticks from trees the died during our freezes. Also apple leaves from the trees that made it thru the two snow events. Are plum tree/leaves safe?

Kitchen herbs are all good. Veggies aren't usually the best choice but carrot leaves are a good by-product, salad leaves would be good. Flowers like nasturtiums, marigolds, mallow, cornflowers, chamomile etc are good. If you have the space it can be worth cultivating a little wild patch of garden with meadow plants that are degu safe. There are some ideas in this thread: deguworld.proboards.com/thread/8772/safe-plants-herbs-leaves-consumption?page=1

I think you and the degus will enjoy it, it's fabulous for their health and enrichment. There is the delayed gratification thing which can affect keeping the enthusiasm going, but if you grow things that you would like to have in your garden anyway then I think it's win-win. If you want us to check for safety of any particular plant, just ask. You may run into issues with there being less info for America and the Texas climate, but I'm sure there are still lots of things you could try. Do bear in mind that common names can vary between Europe and USA, so double check that what you think of as a daisy, for example, is what we mean. Have you seen this American safe plant list? octodons.exotenhaus.ch/index.php/Herbs If you have a look through this, you may find some already growing wild that you could try.

Moletteuk, thank you for the link I don't know what are safe except dandelion. The rest is guessing. But like so many things to do with degu we educate ourselves (with the help of otherwise). These little guys sure are different then a cat

That list should help you, maybe you can find an online guide to help you indentify local plants, or find a book that covers the local area, or a keen gardener will know what the local 'weeds' are. Fresh grass and dandelion are a good place to start, both very beneficial. Let me know how you get on

Not sure how this will work out but I planted Timothy hay on Sat. I'm preparing the soil for vegetables. In Houston we never know what the weather will bring. I lost a apple and peach tree this past month. With Hurricane Harvey (8/17) bring over 40 inches of rain in our area and then this winter having two snow events (as much of a rarity at 40"+ of rain) my garden will be interesting!
