Hi all, new to the forum and in need of help.
Was cleaning cage few days ago and my Degu (chip) has woken up without the use of his back legs. First time this has ever happened. He woke up very confused and was only going round in circleswoth his front two legs. We later placed him in a pile of hay with water and food next to him, avoided picking him up to not startle him. Picked him up today to check on him (2 days later) and his fur was very wet under one side, have patted dry as possible with towel but fear hurting him. Still no use of back legs and very worried, laid him down under a fresh pile of hay on his other side.
Any advice as worried, he is old around 5/6 years old.
Thank you.

Hi there and welcome to the forum! I’m sorry to hear of your troubles with Chip. I think he needs a vet ASAP and needs some scans doing to assess what is going on. This is not something that can be solved at home unfortunately. He may be in considerable pain, so I’d definitely get him to a vet as soon as you can. We have a vet guide on the forum but if you can’t find one close to you on there, let us know your rough location and we will help you find one. I’d say the wetness is probably from urine incontinence which leads me to believe there’s something going on with his spinal cord. He may have had a fall overnight and somehow damaged his spine.

I'm very sorry to hear this. Did he regain the use of his legs over the two days, or has it stayed the same?
This sounds like a very serious problem, so he definitely needs to see a vet.

It does sound major I'm afraid - maybe a stroke or spinal injury as Em says. Really needs a vet right now. To be honest, with things like this, I would advise getting to a vet straight away. If anyone else is in this situation in future, do not wait. Even if you have to find an emergency vet in the middle of the night. For Chip, please get him medical attention as soon as possible. I do hope he makes a full recovery, will be keeping my fingers crossed for him. Please let us know how it goes? Good luck xx

Hey there, welcome to the form.
I am so sorry for the frightening condition that Chip is in right now. That must have been a terrible discovery! Like the other, I really think you must get him in to see a vet ASAP. A spinal injury sounds very likely. Can you tell if he feels any pain when you move his feet? Can you tell if he is pooping OK? What about his eating and drinking?

Welcome to the forum.
I think you need to get him to a degu experienced vet as soon as possible. It sounds like he has an injury.
Please let us know how he gets on.

I second what Savvy has said. There is something significant and serious going on. He needs veterinary help.

Biting you, when he's never done that before, IS a pain response. His way of saying OUCH DON"T DO THAT.
I agree with the others. He needs a vet as soon as possible. This is not a normal problem, or something that you can expect will go away on its own. If there is a way to help him through this, he needs the medical attention NOW, not later.
