I’ve just started letting my degus out in our living room, me and my boyfriend have been quite nervous about this because we didn’t want to lose them! After thinking Ragnar had somehow gotten inside the sofa for about 5 minutes, he came trotting it from behind it with an old smartie (a small chocolate) in his mouth!! When I finally caught him, I couldn’t get the smartie out his mouth! He hid behind the sofa and ate it and I couldn’t get him out until he’d munched the whole thing. After all that ordeal, they are both back in the cage and Ragnar seems to be fine but I’m really worried because some articles I’ve read say that chocolate can be toxic to degus. Is he going to be okay? Should I take him to the vet? I will definitely be moving all the furniture and hoovering everywhere before I left them out again!!

Welcome to the forum. Degus are masters at finding things they shouldn't have.
I would take him to the vet as a precaution. There are so many issues with degus and chocolate I definitely get him checked out.
Please keep us updated as to how he's doing.

The next 24hrs will be the most telling. Keep an eye out for behaviour, drowsiness, and stools. If you've any concerns, call your vet ASAP. Luckily, the cocoa content of chocolate in the UK is lower than other countries. He is more likely to have a massive sugar rush! Fingers crossed he shows no ill effects
