Hello all! Ive been lurking around on the forum for a couple of weeks now so I thought I better stick my head in and say hello! I'm unfortunately not a degu owner yet but hoping to be very shortly, my other half and I have been doing lots of research over the past couple of weeks.... and I've been doing a bit of shopping. Our front room is currently been taken over by degu related mess, including a half built cage as we had a faulty shelf And my little corner of treats.. The other half has already started referring to me as "The crazy degu lady".. We have contacted Peggy at Little bites and are waiting a reply to see if we maybe have our future furballs there. I would like to already say a big thank you to this forum as I've spent hours reading here now and all the advice and knowledge here has been just wonderful and super helpful to make sure we have everything we need and are as prepared as we can be!

Welcome to the forum! I've had rooms looking like yours before, lol, cage builds can get a nightmare! But it looks like you're going to have some very lucky degus. How many are you planning on having?
Tell your other half from us, only people who don't like or keep degus are crazy, we're perfectly sane.
When your little fur babies arrive, we will want pictures, lots and lots of pictures.

WOW! You're going to have some very lucky goos! welcome to the forum!! If Kent isn't too far there is also the Degu Den Rescue if Peggy has nothing suitable How are you doing with diet? That's one of the biggest hurdles with degus so if you can nail down a good diet plan to begin with then it makes it so much easier!

We're planning on getting 2 or 3 depending on whats available and we're in Suffolk so the Kent rescue is a 2 hour + drive for us which might be a bit far.
Diet wise I've got some JR Farm Garden Herbs, dandelion leaves, and dried marigolds/rose petals for forage. Ive also bough the JR Farm degu-snack and herb specials, but I think I'll be picking out some of the carrot flakes in them as there seems to be a lot... I've also made up a seed mix with coriander, cumin, dill, fennel, nigella, chia and flax seeds. I did buy some celery seeds also but they're so tiny i wasn't sure if it was worth putting them in a mix or maybe trying to make some kind of other treat out of them. I haven't got any store-bought nuggets of any variety yet as I was going to wait and see what the Degu's we get are already eating and get that, then maybe slowly move them onto something better/different if its not that great. For occasional treats I got some black sunflower seeds, dried rosehips and some monkeynuts.
I guess once I have them I'll be able to see what they like or don't like and then can change things based on that.

Hello, Eithura, and welcome to the forum! Love your introduction of yourself, and all you have ready so far, to us. And thank you for the kudos for the forum, that always feels great!
Can't wait to hear how things continue to progress forward for you, and then to celebrate with you when you bring home your degus. Then the fun really begins!

I got my babies yesterday! Two sister's. OH spotted them on the P@H adoption program at a store about an hour away, so we called up and then went and got them. I know P@H don't exactly have the best track record with Degus, infact, we were told these girls (there were 4 but we felt we didn't have the space for all 4 or I would have had them all...) were a result of another branch mis-sexxing a pair. I have checked and I'm at least 98% sure they're both girls, they were born on the 15th of November so are still little, and I'm not sure if them being young makes it harder to tell? But as far as I can see there's no gap down there. Well I should get to what you all want.. PICTURES! Meet Luna and Delilah I am completely in love. OH is too I caught him talking to them and referring to himself as "Daddy", which he'd previously made fun of me for saying that I was going to be a Mummy. Ive spent the past 2 days sat on the floor next to the cage, who needs TV when you have Goos?!?!

cuuuuuute! What great photos, such beautiful girls. You're lucky to have them, & they're lucky to have you! LOVE seeing people do their research first, makes me so happy. Degus are unique though, until you have them you don't appreciate their social interactions & squabbling & stuff. No other critter is like them. The noises alone are fascinating (well, not at 3am maybe..) I have those Totally Degu shelves in my goos & chins' cage, aren't they fab? The texture seems to be very attractive to sit on as your 'photo proves

They are super fascinating to watch and the noises are the cutest thing. I helped Delilah fill her nest with toilet paper handing her a sheet at the time last night and I'm not sure I've every been as excited by toilet paper in my life! OH bought the shelves and they do seem to be a favourite napping spot absolutely. I think were going to get some more maybe of the bigger ones since they love them so much. Another hit was hidden rose petals inside some plant pots I picked up for 47p from homebase. I buy them all these nice toys and they want the toilet paper and the 47p plant pots! Lol

mine like the metal lids from food jars, they flip them about & bang them on the bars for fun - but ignore the expensive wicker ball I bought them. Typical awkward goo behaviour Wish my phone wasn't steam powered, I get so jealous when people post lovely photos like yours. Mine just look like a potato in a dark cage near some poop.

It took some sneaky poking phone through the cage bars to get decent pics, most of them did come out looking like blurry potatoes near poop.. Or one cute looking Degu next to one blurry warp speed lookin' goo

hahaha warp speed goo - i know exactly what you mean. I tried to get photos of the guinea pigs, but they ended up warp speed fuzz balls with no faces, super weird & creepy looking. Whereas Jim rabbit actually poses.. think he thinks he's a bit gorgeous (he is, but don't tell him)

Aaawww cute little fluff balls! I just want to cuddle them.
As long as they both look the same down below it should be fine. If they are male you will soon find out, lol. (Hooman slaves to boy degus will know exactly what I mean!)
