We frequently get newbs on here asking about, or already keeping, degus in aquariums or terrariums. In general, they are too small, and can't offer the kind of habitat that a degu would appreciate. It doesn't stop us hooman slaves from longing for a mess free enclosure.............. I came across this site! www.terrarienladen.de/terrarien-fuer-kletterexoten.htmlOnly degu 005 upwards meet our recommendations, but there are some great homes here, and the customer photos (einrichtungsbeispiele) show some great ingenuity! Obviously, these are quite cost prohibitive, but.........

As beautiful as they'd be they're wildly impractical for most people though!

I'd be too scared about breaking the glass, but they are nice!

Very interesting indeed! 0010 certainly is lovely . . . but I would want to put in complete levels rather than what appear to be more a narrow shelf. Wouldn't that be lovely in a sun drenched room? Though . . . it doesn't seem to afford much in the way of hiding places, so degus might spend their life in a state of hypervigilance, being so easily seen by potential enemies.
I know no German, and the translator I have used in the past is laughably bad. Is there any mention in there of how you access the interior of these crystal palaces?

DC there are sliding doors at the front. Some do have full shelves and, as it's made to order, I'm sure they'd make full shelves for you

The person making them doesn't trust them to couriers, so delivers in their own van. Guess you'd need to ask!

I'd be really worried about them being like a greenhouse. I mean if there was any direct sunlight on them I think they would be like a furnace really quick. And, because they have taken photos of them in sunny places for the website, it makes me think greenhouse even more.

I guess it's a matter of common sense. I know my living room gets very warm, because it faces south. In winter, this makes for huge daily temperature fluctuations. That's why my gerbils get the living room, and the goos the north facing kitchen.

I think they might be fine from a vigilance perspective in there as long as they had plenty to internal hiding places. I personally feel like the solid sides bother my girls. Particularly because one side is a "hall" area and so they can hear us moving, but can't see us.
Man, I would love one of these... I'm certain they wouldn't ship to the states though. I wonder how they constructed them... Maybe I can build my own...

Wow these are quite expensive. Personaly i think glass glass a lot of downsides. It is heavy, fragile, impossible to repair or modify, no way to interact with what is living inside, too much sun would turn it into a greenhouse, difficult to access for cleaning. i wrote even more than i thought i would.. These are possible to make yourself. I would buy a wooden shelve unit something similar to this: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61bkbhkeHJL._SY811_.jpg and cover it with organic glass (clear plastic) by using either bolts for easy disasembly or wood glue. The cage would be a lot lighter and quite easy to clean if you make proper access doors.

The problem with those degulord is the wood isn’t safe to chew, it’s nowhere near deep enough, it would be hard to eliminate any exposed edges too. They also might not be 100cm minimum long!

Why is wood dangerous? Many people make cages from them. Only specific types of wood are safe. You’d have to make sure those shelving units were made from safe wood - otherwise I’d suggest they’d be very hard to make properly safe, it would be much easier to build from scratch, to make it safe and to get proper sizing! People use unsafe wood like melamine board but only if they construct themselves and can make sure there are no free edges to chew.

I like your idea, Degulord, but when I look at that shelving unit and see that plank boards are used, I just see looming disaster, LOL. All those exposed edges for chewing!! Degus would make toothpicks of that unit in no time. However, with some creative management . . . it might be OK.
