Not a concern right now, being winter, but we don't have a/c and even in our basement suite it can get very warm during the summer. I've seen some people with chinchillas have tiles in their cage as cooling spots, would this be good for degus? I was considering wrapping ice packs in fleece and placing them on the tiles.

Yes, you can do that.

Get a couple of tiles & have one in the fridge, one in the cage - swap as necessary I'd advise getting a room thermometer & keeping an eye on it. Does anyone have a clue what is too hot for degus? I don't actually know

I saw an idea for rabbits but not sure if it's appropriate for degu. Freeze a 2 litre bottle of water and put it in the cage. Obviously it's have to be run under water initially to prevent freeze burn. But then the idea is bunnies lay next to it to keep cool. I never tried it with my degus but thought it was a good idea... I just have tiles and I feed them a frozen pea or a semi melted ice cube which is amusing.... yes I'm a cruel goo mum for laughing lol

I wouldn't want to see them in temperatures higher than 27 celsius in a closed room. Some report that their degus have endured temps of 30 celsius, but in heat like that I would be places cool tiles at the very least.

Thanks for the input everyone! I used to give frozen peas to my rats in the summer, wasn't sure if degus could have them, too. I don't think it would ever get up to 27, but if it does I'm probably gonna have to get some sort of a/c that would work down here.
