I've been giving the petals from the roses in my garden with no problem (chinchilla) . But how about the rose hips? Can degus have the hips from every rose out there that makes a decent size one, or is it only the one we can make jam and marmelade out of, they should be offered?

As far as I am aware, goos are fine with both, and I haven't come across any that they can't eat, but I will have a quick check and let you know if there are any issues.
UPDATE: Just double checked across some of the German sites. Roses and rose hips are on the "unproblematic" list, meaning that the only issue should be excessive eating 😀

I think the size of rosehips means there could be a significant shot of sugar in them, so for that reason I've never fed them. Otherwise they are safe.

Thank you. I have seen some weird info on American chin sites where they say only read roses are okay. Unless it's a name for a specific plant I'm not aware of I find it a bit odd that one colour should be safer than an other colour. They do primarily dry red roses. My thought on this is it must be a type of rose that's very productive in terms of flowering, nothing specific to do with colour. So I'll just keep on giving the petals from my roses I know the seeds from rose hips can be used as itching powder. Tbh that's really the only reason why I'm hesitant about giving them as a treat.

I've never heard anything about different coloured roses, I suppose the garden cultivars have been messed about with a lot genetically to get all the varieties, but it's probably only very slight genetic changes to get the different colours and habits.
The itchy seeds is the other reason why I haven't bothered with rosehips - they stopped me breaking them into smaller pieces to offer them, and I was slightly concerned they may irritate the degus, although they probably wouldn't.
