So we just picked up some straw from the feed store for my rabbit's hutch and I searched the forum and saw that it was okay to use for degu nesting material. The straw was being kept outside so I'm wondering if I should freeze it to make sure there are no bugs in it? I always bake my cork logs and play sand before I put them in my pets habitats (prior bad experiences) so I was wondering if I should freeze the straw before giving it to my degus to nest in?
Also I noticed when putting the straw in my rabbit's hutch that it had strawberry tops in it? What a nice treat!

They're going to love that!!!
By all means, freeze the straw if it makes you feel more comfortable. It doesn't guarantee no bugs etc, but....
And your two look adorable! How old are they??

Oh good, I'm glad they will enjoy it! I thought it might be something interesting and new for them. I'm not exactly sure how old they are. The one on the far right is Honey. He passed away a few days after getting him. I think they were only a few months. I still have his brother Basil and pushed up intros with my new degu Copper because he was getting pretty depressed. I'm not sure how old Copper is either but he's pretty big in comparison.

They do look different from each other!
Have you checked for yourself they are both the same sex? How are the intros going?

Looks like pup and adult to me! Don't believe a word that p@h tells you about their sex. We've already had a few unexpected litters on here, compliments of their staff not knowing the difference!

Yep, I triple checked! The woman at the rescue said they separated him after the litter and kept mom with the girls so he's been by himself. I still checked anyways. They seem to be getting along with minor scuffles every now and then. Mostly Basil is harassing Copper and Copper in uninterested in him until he is annoyed and puts him in his place. So I'd say we are making progress with tub intros.

I was very surprised by his size because when I messaged the woman she called him a juvenile! I actually got him from a reptile rescue of all places.

He may well be! Just double check down below (remember, all degus have a cone, the key is the gap between the cone and the bum hole). I'd hate to think she's large because she's pregnant!
Degu size really does vary. Within my lot, I've got two brothers. One is 320g, and the other is 240g!
