Venk's been to the vets today - Jenna this time - as I was a little concerned about the constant squeak, rapid breathing and head tilt while eating he's had the past few days. He has a bit of inflammation in his lungs so he's on 0.1ml of dog strength metacam twice a day for 5 days. His teeth appear to be structurally perfect but one side is wearing slightly unevenly because he's favouring one side, probably due to some sort of pain in the hinge of the jaw but that would require xrays or CT to diagnose properly. In other words I currently have 3 defective degus!

Awwww!! I'm sorry! I really hope that you very quickly see help with the metacam. Does it work as pain relief and an anti-inflammatory?

Just to say be very careful when you add vitamins to their water. Venk drank his fine the first night so I refilled and put the vitamin C in again thinking all was okay, next night I was suspicious he hadn't drank anything so kept an eye on him all day yesterday and saw that he'd keep going to the water bottle, sniffing it and walking away.
Changed the water and didn't add any drops to it, offered him the bottle where he was lying and voilà, he started drinking again. Must have drank about 50-60ml last night which is unlike him because he was obviously thirsty. He will take two drops on a small bit of shredded wheat though - I'm trying to supplement as it should help to boost his immune system.
Very little improvement though, his breathing is still laboured, spends a lot of time fluffed-up but still wanting to be on my shoulder and climbing up to it while he's out. Eating and (now) drinking is fine so that's not a concern but the head-tilt is still there. Hasn't had his wheel for a few days thanks to his leg but I think he's just been resting more anyway.
Was very worried on Sat that I was going to wake up a degu down but I think that was probably slight dehydration.

You can't get anything past them...unless it involves shredded wheat!
Is he on antibiotics?

Nope, I'm going to take him in with Sherlock tomorrow though so we'll see what they say. It's just the worry with Christmas coming up that I'm going to be away from the vets for a few days with all this going on (I'll have to take them all home with me thanks to Sherlock's mouth cleaning regime). The stress won't be ideal but I can't risk leaving any of them and getting a friend to look after them since I'm the one who knows what's normal for each of them and what's not.

I'm just thinking with head tilt that could be an ear infection and chest noise that could be a chest infection, it seems worth getting him on an antibiotic. Could you ring the vets and see what they think?
Maybe you can go over possible scenarios and plans with the vet so you have any next steps that might occur over christmas covered?
