Degu: Spidey
Skill: Refusing to provide entertainment!
Spidey has been doing some great stuff recently. Unfortunately, he doesn't like being filmed. I don't know if it's because he associates it with me laughing at him, or if he knows I'm posting it on here for laughs. Every time he hears the beep of my phone as it starts to record, he stops, looks up at me for (long sighted) visual confirmation, and walks off!

Degu: Smashygoo (aka Spud)
Skills: Recognition and cooperation
Spud absolutely hates human contact. When I open the door, Squidgy and Sausage come straight down. I lift them out one at a time, have a little cuddle, and pop them on the floor to start running. Spud won't let me. He's not let me touch him since the day he came back from the rescue. He will spy on my, but will not walk into ANY tube other than the long one that they use to get in and out. He simply walks away in disgust.
When it's time to go back in, I simply gather my things, get up off the kitchen floor, and tap the tube. On most occasions, he takes this as his cue and goes straight in! This is his compromise for not letting me pick him up!

Fiercely individual!! Spud makes me think of a movie/TV character . . . but the name of said character eludes me. When I think of it, I'll put it in. Your boys have NO shortage of character!!

I reckon Spidey has a criminal past and hates for there to be any evidence out there.

Lmao!
He's no wimp, mind, and is the smartest of the group. Last night, I managed to pick up a tube with him inside. He went straight to the smallest gap in my fingers and launched himself two metres across the room to escape. With legs and tail spread, he looked like a blooming flying squirrel!

Degu: Scaredy
Skill: Sound association
Scaredygoo likes his medicine. He can now differentiate the sound of me shaking the metacam bottle (as opposed to any other), and takes it as his cue to go to the perch closest to me.

Degu:Scaredy
Skill: Scavenging
Not only does Scaredy realise when I have crusty bread, he knows I don't put it down within reach any more. Now, if I'm eating any, he scurries over and sits on my lap directly below my mouth, catching the crumbs.

Degu: Sausagegoo
Skill: Punishment avoidance
During free range time, Sausagegoo likes to go back in, lean out of the open door, and try to get hold of the big boy cage. He's fallen off a couple of times (about 1.2m), but carried on. Piece of board was placed to stop him, and to protect him (falls, Spidey teeth etc). He now just chews the board instead, at maximum, teetering reach. One irritated day, I chucked one of the plastic balls at him, and it bopper him directly on the nose. Now, whenever he (repeatedly) starts to gnaw there, I grab a ball. I don't chuck it, but he certainly knows the sight and sound of it, and immediately backs away.......

Degu: Squidgygoo (RIP)
Skill: Rival Management
Remember that saying about keeping your friends close, but your enemies closer? Sausagegoo was Squidgy's closest friend, following him around everywhere. Since Squidgy's untimely departure, the smallest goo in the house has become the boss, bullying Spud (50g heavier) into submission!

Degu: Scaredygoo
Skill: Timing and Consequences
Scaredy was watching me sort the medication out, and that Spidey gets his first. When I turned to Spidey, he was turned over, legs akimbo, snoozing away. I stopped to get a photo, then moved in for another. Scaredy got flustered waiting, so wandered over and jumped on him so he could take his meds, allowing Scaredy to have his without delay!
Two minutes, Spidey was back asleep, and Scaredy couldn't have cared less.

Yep, Sherlock has this one down to a tee with his meds too As for problem solving (and team-work) this is Tom and Jerry's story. They have a flying saucer and a couole of cardboard tubes in their playpen and have recently been trying to figure out how to escape it. Their solution? Working together to roll the cardboard tubes until the wheel has been wedged in place then trying to get out by jumping from the top of it.
