I'm all excited now..... I placed an advert in the local free ads for degus, or information on breeders..and finally i had a response tonight. There is a lady who is not far from me, who has seven youngsters for sale...they are not 8 week old babies but hey i cant be too picky. The lady who called me sounds like a breeder who may have got two many degus on her hands or thought she could keep all her babies but now has a change of circumstances. Ive got to call her back because when she called i was in the middle of pets at home shopping for my fish...im hoping i can go and have a look at the cuties sometime this weekend and then make a decision. Has anybody got any ideas on questions i should ask her?...obviously ive got to ask if they are used to being handled but anything else that my mind may have forgotten?

do you have an update on the degu situation? dont worry if they are not used to being handled, this is something that can easily be changed with time and patience. make sure you get all the same sex, and a cage suitable to keep them in that they cannot get out of!
good luck

hello yes i do have an update...
I'm now the proud mummie of 4 boys!...names have yet to be decided (any help with names would be much appreaticated!). They were in a single tired cage with atleast another 20 degus.....and we're being housed outside so i hope there are no side affects from being brought back indoors. All four are looking a little weary at the moment, but i have had a brief handling and to be honset with a bit of time spent they should all be easily handable....there is one that is already going to be the boss i reckon.. The cage i brought is a ferplast one designed for chipmunks...ive taken the horrible steel wheel out as i know the tails would get caught very quickly in that.

Congratulations. Give them a couple of weeks of quiet time. Just sit with them and read. Offer them treats. Put your hand into the cage and rest it somewhere comfortable for you. Wait for them to explore and sit in your hand. (a sunflower seed or two would help inspire them a bit!) You are right, slowly but surely you will be able to handle them more and more.
