I'm so amazed at how cute my babys are, ;D All 16 of them. The worry of homing them seems to go when i sit and watch them. I've just taken some pics and will get them on here soon. Am worried about catching them all to sex them when they get bigger. i can tell its not going to be easy. Will handle them as soon as poss to keep them calm. The mums are very jumpy at the mo and dad just looks lonely, feel sorry for him.

I remember how cute Mocha's babies were too. Sexing them at 6wks is a real trip! It helps to have two people and two separate cages - you do have two cages so you can leave the girls with the moms and put the boys in with their dad after they have weaned at 6 weeks. You will need to have two other containers though say two deep cardboard boxes so the little babies don't climb out and escape. I kept trying to pick babies up out of my big cage then put the girls back into the big cage and the boys into my smaller cage. Kept picking up the same girls since you can't tell them apart when they are running about!.. Would have been easier to pick up baby #1 sex it and put it into the proper girl or boy box. Then pick up baby #2 and so forth. Then re-check as you put them into the girls cage or boys cage.

Thanks for advise sounds a very good idea. A new cage is being built as we speak.
I did have a fab idea for a cage when your limited for floor space and thats where the babies were born. I bought a largish book case( wall mounted) from argos and we built wooden hinged meshed boors on it that open up so the whole front is open. i Cut holes in the shelves and added rope, branches and boxes ( need 2" lip's on front of shelves to stop mess falling out) This works really well, as we have all found out that if theres mesh to though poo out, they will throw it. I have leant this from my other cage which did house my rat and its 5ft tall 14" sq( free shanding) wooden frame and mesh round all sides. My dogs and i are always picking up poo.
Cheers to everyone for all your help

I like the idea of using a bookcase but I'd have to find a metal one and use perhaps small window screens. The Degu Girls would chew through wood in a couple of days, plastic too!

Now that is a familiar story... How is the re-homing going? I had almost the exact same thing happen to me, although I ( and my roommate) were both allergic to the degus. I ended up having to rehome all 14. I ws lucky and I found a great specialty shelter, and there are now 4 remaining, along with my two girls, who could possibly be pregnant again. My house is way too quiet. It's very tempting because, my favourite degu, Pisco, is still up for adoption, along with another male baby. I know that I can't... Your baby pictures are fabulous.
