Tonight we sadly had to have our Hazel put to sleep. The vet suspected she had a tumour or something on her brain, and she started fitting when she got to the vets. This leaves Midge on her own. We had already had to rehome her sister Glimmer as she kept attacking Hazel. We don't want her to be lonely, she is only about 4 years old. My daughters are grown up and leaving home soon, and I haven't got the time to be taking care of her. Midge is such a sweetie I would love her to find a new home with new friends, somewhere where she can be loved and taken care of. Midge is the friendliest Degu we have had. She loves to sit on your lap (especially if you have some titbits for her!) and she is good with children.
We live near Southampton. If there is anyone who thinks they can offer her a home (and her cage, toys and tons of food) please contact me. Many thanks.

I am so sorry for your loss! I hope that you will succeed in finding an excellent home for Midge to live the rest of her days . . . may they be long and wonderful!!

Thank you, she is only 4 and such a gently character. I hope I can find someone who understands how to introduce degus, which is why I came here. I think she would be happy to pair with a youngster or two, as she is so social.

If I didn't have two groups of boys, I'd have willingly taken her on, especially as you're just down the road. Good luck!

I have four girls, I would happily take her if I was close enough. I would be very grateful if someone could take her, as long as I know my little girl will be going to someone who knows how to introduce degus. She is a gentle, quiet girl who keeps herself to herself and avoids confrontations. She unfortunately went through a difficult period when her sister decided she wanted to take top dog position from Hazel when she was 3, and the fighting became terrible and very costly in vet bills! Poor Midge would run scared into a corner and sit squeaking. Sadly we had to make the decision to rehome her sister, and peace and harmony was restored. I worry that Midge would not cope with too much conflict aimed at her. I am hoping she can be matched with another quiet degu or two eventually. She looks so lonely without Hazel to snuggle up with! Do you think she could be matched to your girls? I live near Southampton, not far from junction 2 of M27

Hi degulover21, unfortunately that is over 3 hours away. We will be coming up past there, but not until end of August. Putting her with youngsters would be the ideal thing, I think, but don't want to give her 8 weeks to get used to being on her own.
Don't know if anyone else has any advice on the situation?

Can someone give the name of a nearby rescue who might have a goo to pair Midge with? (I'm in the USA, so I can't help). I know on occasion a rescue has done the introductions with a lone goo, and then given them back to the original owner. Would you be open to continuing to keep degus if something like that could happen?

It is not the introduction part that is the problem, I have done that before with Midge and her sister to Hazel after her sister died of a heart problem. They belonged to my daughters, but they are leaving home in a few months and can't take them with them to their shared houses. I have just returned to employment and haven't got the time to devote to them now.

Little bites in Luton might be able to direct you to somewhere close-by, it's the closest degu rescue that I know of (and still a fair distance) but I also know they're full to the brim and can't take anymore in atm.

nataliesw or there's Notts Nibblers but she's even further. But again if Little Bites doesn't answer, try Notts. Ideally someone with another lone goo, or a neutered male would be a nice and good bet.
