Just in case anyone from the USA, particularly the northeast is browsing and looking to adopt: The rescuer (Mill City Degus) I got my girls from just had a BIG intake. She says more than 150 degus; they will all be looking for homes. Mill City Degus Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/mummysdegus/ www.degurescue.org/for-adoption.htmlI wholeheartedly recommend this rescuer. She may not be able to completely fulfill cage standards or natural nutrition given how many she rescues, but she is VERY in the know and clearly took VERY good care of my beautiful girls, saving them from being reptile food. She also is experienced with a big rescue like this, she did another rescue of similar size a few years back. She also does homework on the potential new home, mostly in the form of an interview to make sure the person adopting understands the unique care needs. She even asked details like if I had air conditioning, so she cares very much for where they go.

I think she's a pretty low-tech sort of person. I don't think she even likes to use email. PM me if you're serious about helping her with a donation, I could help you get in touch without incurring an international phone call.

Hi everyone! I am Diana and I run (or it runs me!) Mill City Degus. Thanks for all the kind words. I dropped the website due to cost and all my cash going into feeding degus.
Most of the rescues are older and since they were all in mixed in three large cages, I can not tell the ages. Some of them are a complete mess. Some are good for adoption. The rest will probably live out their lives here unless experienced adopters are willing to take them on. I use Sweet Meadow Farm guinea pig blend and have for ten years. I live close enough by there to drive and save on shipping costs. They also have great hay and I purchase the large box.
The most I have had here prior were fifty. They would go thru a fifty pound bag in a month. Any donation would be welcome! I am on facebook and will respond to any questions or adoptions. My phone number is listed there.
I am lucky to have a good connection with the American Gerbil Society and in the past have generously volunteered to drive them back to adopters from their shows and even taken some on for themselves.
I appreciate the good words from others who have adopted here. I never set out to be a degus rescuer, but my first group I found of 95 left me no choice. The situations I have run into are pretty deplorable. Bad housing, wrong food, no hay, and no sexing at all, just letting them breed. Yikes!
The things I have done to help this issue might be considered crazy. Oh well, crazy I am!
As far as adoption fees, I ask for donations. I am happy just to get them to good homes. I currently have them in three rooms and eight cages. They are too packed in now and I would love to reduce some out of each cages. I do have a few pups and am watching any signs of pregnancy as time goes on. I then move them out to put them in smaller wire cages away from the crowd. As much as I love pups I truly hope I do not see anymore. I have been in rescue mode for eight years now and still have some from two years ago, so I am very aware that they require the right person for adoption.
Thank for your support and keep spreading the word!

I just got off the phone with Mill City Degus, it sounds like everyone is crowded, but ok right now. Obviously 150 in 8 cages is very cramped, but she said that they were rescued from 3 cages. It sounds like the basic food and water situation is also an improvement. Medical care is the next step, she said many have eye and tail injuries.
She said that once things settle a little she'll start to look for adoptable groupings to send to more traditional shelters for increased viability. Right now it would be hard to even adopt out any because there is no semblance of group dynamic and she really wants successful matches with their homes. She thinks that many will stay with her until the end due to medical and social issues.
However, don't let that put anyone off from contacting her! She's really brilliant with degus and with 150 I'm sure that she could work out adoptable groupings very shortly to go to a good home!
I'm sending along some stuff to help with her greatest needs right now.

I cannot find the facebook page? Thats some serious dedication imagine the gnawing!! On the phone she said that the greatest noise is from the water bottles! With so many there are multiple bottles with the little ball valve constantly going! That would keep me up at night!
