Hi,
My names Andrea and I live outside of Vancouver BC, I'm a volunteer for a non profit small animal rescue group and do fostering and rescue for them.
I'm a gerbil nut, I have 15 of my own, 2 foster gerbils, 4 rabbits I have adopted/rescued, 1 foster hamster, and the reason I've signed up here, 2 Degus I've adopted and 3 that are in foster care with me. I also have a dog who is the true 'mom' to all the critters
I've always been a fan of Degu's and said 'one day' I will own some but I've always been a big chicken when it comes to owning something new. I got a call one day from a Lady who heads up our Rescue group asking me if I coudl pick up some 'baby degus' at the animal control (as they only take dogs). When i got down there there were 5 Degus in a tupperware container, the lady @ the AC said the people who dropped them off said that their roommate moved out and left these 'rats' behind. The AC workers had to put holes in the lid as the people didn't.
I got them home and did some super research to sex them, we ended up with 2 boys and 3 girls.
This picture was taken the first day -
I named her Cici and she ended up being the freindliest of the girls. Later on I had a friend who used to breed Degu's drop by and give me an experts opinion. We came to the decision there was Mom & Dad and these were their older babies, we also thought there may be a good chance all three girls are pregnent (Whitch they ended up not being! woo hoo!).
Though 2 out of three girls were very friendly right from the start, the two boys were very frightend.
That changed. I named the girls Cici (mom & friendliest), Pipa & Tiki and after a while of the boys not having names, I named them Bruce (Shark from nemo) & George (As in curious the monkey).
Bruce, George and I have bonded so much since those days, I ended up being a 'foster failure' and adopting them . I knew I wanted Degu's one day and well I just couldn't think of loosing those two boys, so no matter what they are here to stay. (And of course the girls are more then welcome )
Anyways, enough reading, that's me and my goo's
My best buddy Bruce.
