Hi all
My name is Julie and I live in Gloucester, UK - I recognise Hanlou on this forum - but I bet there are a few others I have not recognised yet.
I am better known as Acrorats - as rats are my first love.
I have 3 chinchillas living in a very large parrot kingdom type cage (extra wire on the outside to stop excapees - it is amazing how a full grown chinchilla can squeeze through 3 cm gap!)
Don't panic - I know this is a degu forum and I have only mentioned rats and chins, I'm getting there - honest!!
I saw 6 rescue degus in the Cheltenham animal shelter while I was picking up a rescue ferret and 2 rescue rats and had remembered that they are supposed to live alongside chins. So I brought 2 of the 6 home and introduced them to the 3 chins. They were fine together. Not just fine - in fact by the 2nd day I coudl not see the degus - then I spotted them .... 2 noses popping out between two fluffy chins that were in their hammock.
Well I was smitten enough to go back and collect the other 4 girls and they are all getting along well.
I have joined this forum as I honestly believe that although I have a goodo degu book, I need more information to further my knowledge to give these cheery girls (all called Dave) a happy life.
That's it - off to read your posts now ....
bye for now
Jules

I did check the sexes before bringing them in and they all looked the same and different from the cage of males. I only hope that none of the girls are pregnant though!
They are all getting really stroppy with each other today ... I thought with the 2 children at their father's this week that I would have a hormone free week!
Ah well
Back to the hammocks
*waves back to Hanlou - who seems to get everywhere*

Lol!!!! But it's all related to FR really, as my degus are from Emma (furryfriends).
I fell in love with them on FR and learnt and researched about them on here then Emma posted about having lots to rehome and magic14 and sat ferried them 'up north' for me with a lot of other assorted animals. :-)

Hi, welcome to this marvelous website, the members of the forum are an amazing source of info, and experience. I'm pretty sure most queries will get an answer from someone somewhere, as everyone wants to help. It's nice to hear of Degus and Chinchillas living together, having only met a Chinchilla for the first time last night, and had the chance to hold him, I am well and truely hooked, so it is great to hear that the two species can be kept together like this.

If it's any interest, when my female degu unexpectedly had a litter (she was obviously pregnant when I got her as I have all girls) she initially spent a lot of time chasing off the other girls - 2 of the chinchillas took it in turns to sit on the babies to keep them warm. When Mum came back the chinchillas moved away and she fed the babies!
