Hello and thank you for the advice so far.
My name is Jo and 2 sex change degus are my sons. I joined the forum due to one of them having 3 pups today.
I am kicking myself because I thought I'd done my research clearly I hadn't although a vet and two nurses failed to sex them properly as well.
I am also slave to 4 cats and 2 elderly dogs.

Hello Jolil1072! Welcome to the forum! I'm sorry for the shock of the discovery of pups. Now you know why the degu was getting so fat. Is the second degu also looking rather rotund, or have you noticed her rapidly increasing in size? May I ask how long you have had them now? Not much over two months at the very most, I'm sure. Well, this will have once again put you on the track of further research. May I ask what your cage is like? Pups are active within 1-4 days after birth. Some even within hours! They like to toddle around and will walk through any opening that is large enough, which is anything wider than 1 cm, so you may need to pup proof your cage. Most of us that have had the experience of pups have had to do this. If you have bars or mesh large enough for a pup to get through, you need to take steps to keep them inside very quickly. They are very mobile and it is terrifying to find them outside the cage. Worse should they be stepped on, or if another pet within the house gets hold of them. Initially, I used wide pieces of cardboard attached around the exterior of our cage to help keep them in. Then I tried screening mesh, but they just chew right through that, so DON'T try that, LOL! I ended up getting a mesh of about 1cm openings and wrapping the cage with that.

Welcome to the forum Jo. Don't beat yourself up, have heard this happen loads of times (especially with p@h) I don't know anything about tiny babies, so can't help there, but there's loads of people on here with experience so you will get some great advice - you're in the right place. I second uglibug, we want cute baby 'photos when you get chance!

Welcome! You will be very glad you joined because everyone here is so lovely and kind, they will help as best as they can with any problems! We also definitely want more pup pics! Our first goos Pinky and Perky are from p@h and we were sold them as boys, but they're definitely girls lol. Good job we checked in case we bought a third under the pretensions we had boys! We would be having babies too. I hope you enjoy the delight that is Degu parenthood, they clearly make great parents!
