One minute she was walking along my arm, the next she panic jumped and landed badly. It's stopped bleeding now but I'm guessing all I can really do now is just keep an eye on her for the time being.

OMG! Did it catch on something or that's from impact?

I'm afraid it happened so bewilderingly fast that I'm unsure of what caused the cut, but I think she landed straight onto one of the coasters on the degus cage. She's very shaken up and visibly terrified, so I'm going to have to leave her alone for a while as I fear the stress could kill her.

Try and stay calm and concentrate on calming her down, keep things warm and quiet or whatever is most normal.

Try and stay calm and concentrate on calming her down, keep things warm and quiet or whatever is most normal. That's the plan. I'm going to leave her be for the next couple of days, as she's normally quite timid as is. The good news is she's behaving as normal now, eating, drinking, and playing with things hanging in the cage, though the slightest movement from me sends her darting for cover. I think it's just a superficial cut, but my main concern is the possibility of broken bones. Chins have rather fragile skeletons, so there's a possibility something might be broken that's unapparent right now. She isn't showing any signs of broken bones though. When I first saw the blood, I thought she'd broken her teeth but I neglected to check them, really hope that hasn't happened. I'll be very reluctant to let either of them climb on my arms again after this. Providing she's ok, I'm probably going to have to start from scratch in earning their trust, since both of them seem to think I did it.

Well done, you sound remarkably calm Do you think you might be able to check her over tomorrow? I take it you have to weigh up the stress on her vs how much a vet might be able to help? Looking at the photo I can't see any cut the blood might be coming from, it does look like it might have come from her mouth, but that' not necessarily bad news. Perhaps keep an eye on her eating for any clues. I think you probably have to wait and see how much your relationship has been set back and probably weigh up the risk of having them on your shoulder when you have less on your mind. It's difficult to factor in random noises and other random things that can spook them. Anyway, I'm sure it's a great sign that she is acting completely normally apart from being on edge.

I'm so sorry, Skardsen! How terrifying for all of you!! I hope and pray that she has nothing broken, and no internal injuries. Do keep her warm enough, but of course not overheated.

She will come around again and start to trust you again try not to worry about that. If she's anything like Garf she will have a small fear of heights and/or leaping from them now which is never a bad thing!
Since Garf fell of the mezzanine he goes nowhere near there now and never leaps or drops off high edges or my arms.
Hopefully no harm done but a lesson learned. Just keep a eye on her from afar and move around very slowly, talking to her before you do so she's prepared for the sudden movement

Skardsen, keep a very close check on your chin regarding any damage that may have occurred with teeth; hairline cracks, chips, misalignment or indeed any abnormality. If necessary, get x-rays carried out just to be sure. I hope your chin makes a full recovery, but be aware that teeth issues as a result of trauma can manifest further in the future.

She seems fine today, just a little scared still. She's eating ok but I haven't been able to check her teeth. I do think it was a cut on her chin but all that fur makes it hard to see for sure.

Have you managed to find where it was bleeding from?
And it might be worth taking her sandbath out for a few days to let the cut heal.

She's back to her energetic, playful self. Last night she jumped onto my arms, had a good nibble on my fingers and did a little bit popcorning. natnat899 She won't let me get a good look at it, but it seems to be exactly where the most blood is in the pic. I did take the dust bath out, though it looks like she's going to be fine.

Good were you able to look at her teeth? I find that holding a treat high through the cage, you can sometimes get a look at their teeth - might also help in looking at that cut.

I've tried to no avail. She's never liked it when I do that, I'm guessing it seems imposing to her. There's a dark spot right where the blood is in the pic, so it's got to be there. There's just too much fur in the way though.

Ok, just watch out for any signs of it becoming infected I've had both my chins or degus cut themselves before (mostly my degus tbh), I just remove the sand and keep the cage very very clean. Luckily I can usually find a way to look at the cut - all my rodents are pretty food orientated (pickle is a bit more cautious though!)

I was advised to clean the cuts if stuff got in them, sand etc. Just held the goo in a towel and gently cleaned the area with a cotton wool bud and some salt water. All have always healed fine!
