I was in luck and managed to get them already. They have to be the most adorable things I've laid eyes on (next to my degus of course). Everyone was fawning over them on the trip home. They're a mother and daughter pair whose previous owner unfortunately couldn't keep them anymore, due to work commitments. I want to give them time to get settled, so I won't be using the camera just yet, but I will post the pics of them from the ad: This is Professor Fluff (PHD). She's the mother and she's 18 months old. When I introduced her to the new home she pretty much immediately had the most legendary dust bath of all time. This is her daughter, Floss. She's 6 months old. She has red eyes, so I think her dad must've been albino. Chinchilla fur has to be felt to be believed. It's got to be the softest thing on the planet. In fact, I'm quite sure they're classified incorrectly; I don't think they're actually rodents. It's obvious chinchillas are actually some kind of living cloud.

Yay! Aren't they beautiful?! Love their names.
To keep their fur tip top, you can use blue mountain dust (you can get it on ebay or amazon) It's a bit pricey, but a big tub will last over a year. You only need one scoop added to their usual sand. I use it for goos & gerbils too, but it's way more noticeable when chins use it.
Can't wait to see more photos, am really missing Dave seeing these. Floss looks a lot like he did.

They just seem to love watching the chins.

Once they're well and truly settled in, as in a few months from now, I'm going to very cautiously let the degus interact with them. The hope being that they'll get on and maybe play together. I'll be really careful with it though, just in case Fluff sees them as a threat to her baby.

But I still have a bit of a yearning for a couple of chins . . . some cats . . . a few horses . . . BIRDS . . . maybe some goats, yeah definitely goats . . . I need a MUCH bigger place!

They were playing together so I tried to get a quick video, to which they immediately stopped. Never work with animals eh? Today I'll be working on building trust with them, letting them see that my hands aren't a threat, and offering little treats every now and then. Nothing invasive, just little offerings throughout the day. Pretty much going to do the same thing I did with my degus and hope that works.
Floss is quite shy. She's often hiding behind the saucer. It's to be expected really, since she's still a baby. With the degus, I worked more with the shy one (Frankie) to pretty good effect. Once she starts recognising the sound of a rattling bag as an indication something good is happening, I'm hoping she'll come out of her shell more.

It won't take long i'm sure. They're going to be jumping all over you pretty soon. You know how seeing a baby can make you broody? Well, I now have the chin equivalent thanks to you - & I've got the cage still....... arrrrggghhhh! No. I am full to capacity. Unless I get rid of the couch (which I hate anyway....) NOOOOOO! Someone stop me!! This is all your fault skardsen Edit: NO one post pics of pygmy goats for the love of god!

congratulations! I love the name Professor Fluff! My housemate at uni had some very friendly rats, and one day we let the gentlest one delicately meet Mowgli though the bars. And I was so surprised how polite they both were! Lots of gentle sniffing rather than screams (which is what I thought might happen). A few more times we let them meet face to face on my bed and they actually got on pretty well. So hopefully your goos will like the chins!

randomname They're cute, but I have to admit I find goat eyes somewhat disconcerting. Still, here's a man arguing with an ibex: dops The degus are definitely interested in them. No yelling obscenities or trying to get through the bars, just sitting quietly in fascination. The chins know they're there, but I don't think they can see them, as they have poor eyesight. Once the chins have had a few days to stabilise and become accustomed to their new home, I'll let them out and see how the degus react to them leaping around. Then, afterwards, when the chins are back in, I'll let the boys out and give them a ladder to climb up and see the chins.

It's definitely a risk, considering that house cats were bred for killing rodents. I think under the right circumstances and very careful supervision, most mammals can get along with each other.
I just noticed something in the cat and degu video. The degu's tuft of fur on his tail is white. Never seen that before.
