I do a mix of guinea pig pellets and chinchilla food but the only Chinchilla food we can find has raisins and bananas in it (which I know are not good for degus) so I have to take them out. Is there anyone else who mixes and if so what brand of chinchilla food do you use? Maybe I can get it somewhere else if I knew what kind to get. Thanks.

i think you have the same kind of chinchilla food i was sold when i first brought my degus home... i got real sick of picking out the bananas and raisins too. i just buy plain guinea pig food now, because the pellets look almost identical, and most of the time they're eating timothy hay anyway.

Ive just been to the pet shop this morning, and ive spent the last 20 mins picking all the crap out like raisins and dates I use a mix of half chinchilla mix and half rabbit mix, mainly because the chinchilla mix is about 50% alfalfa sticks and they dont eat them very much so i throw a bag of rabbit mix, which is rughly the same only with seeds. God nows how boring it is picking out the raisins...........

I've been feeding my Degus Brisky's Degu Pellets formulated for Degus. You have to really read the ingredients on chinchilla, rabbit and guineapig feeds - many contain molasses, corn syrup and/or other sugars which we all know the Degus cannot properly process. I read every treat I buy too. Even Brisky's suggest some treats for Degus that I would not feed my Degus. Their Degu Pellets look to be a good food source for Degus. www.brisky.com

craaaaaaaaap... the stuff i'm feeding them now has cane molasses as an ingredient. do you think it's in large enough amounts that it would really harm them? i've got a 5-pound bag of this stuff, and quite frankly i can NOT afford brisky's food... i mean, surely degus have to be able to process a LITTLE bit of sugar, because there's bound to be sugar in the stuff they eat in the wild, especially if they're not picky eaters. surely wild degus don't just habitually get diabetes and die, right?

As long as they are burning it off someway...I don't think there would be a problem with it..

well the problem with diabetes is that in order to burn sugar, it has to be absorbed into your cells, and to do that insulin has to break it down when it enters your bloodstream during digestion. when you're diabetic, you have little to no insulin, so the sugar just sits in your blood instead of being delivered to your cells.

Well I checked my mixture and they both have cane molasses in it. I was able to find guinea pig pellets with no molasses but it is really expensive. So I have mixed some of that in and will continue looking for other chinchilla food or maybe switch to just using guinea pig food. Thanks for all of your help!!!

Well I found some guinea pig pellets that are expensive that have no molasses cane. So I mix them with the chinchilla pellets and the other guin=ea pig pellets. Well they leave the new ones alone. They will eat the odd one but mostly no. So I will have to see if my guinea pig likes them. They must not taste as good or something to them.
