I have been looking everywhere and I can't find any good research about Degus in the wild. I was thinking the best diet would be something very similar to what they eat in the wild which of course wouldn't really include a lot of the food I feed them. I know that they are prone to diabetes because of the lack of sugar in their natural habitat but if anybody has any detailed information or any good websites on how to find this info please share!

mostly grass, roots, tubers, all that high-fiber stuff you find in scrubby areas. i just stick to timothy hay, guinea pig pellets and vitamin supplements, along with rose hips and pumpkin seeds/almond slices/peanuts as treats.

i buy these crunchers called "ultravite" at petco/petsmart. they have several varieties, but i stick with the guinea pig variety because it has the same amount of vitamins as the other kinds, with added vitamin C. the degus love them!

Ask at your local pet shop, but get the ones that are for chinchilas or gerbils rather than the one for rats, as chinchila vitamins have the vitamin c in. If they havent got any in, ask to order it in for you.

For vitamin suppliments, we get Oasis Vita-Drops with extra vitamin C (for guinea pigs). It is a liquid you can put in their water. When we first added some to their water, I remember Mario taking a sip, then seeming to swirl it around in his mouth, and he did this a few times, testing it, then finally he decided it was yummy and started drinking like normal... It was cute ^^

lol...i have checked out my local pet shop..not sure if you have them in london(i think thats where ur from) shigatsu but its PJ's pet center..anyways their knowledge about degus is horrible in the first place...they dont seem to know much when it comes to degus so im too nervous to ask them for a vitamin supplement in case they give me something wrong and it hurts my degus.

I give my degus a vitamin block, available pretty much anywhere, and good for gnawing too!

my local pet store is pretty limited about the degu items they have in stock. as for small animals its mostly about the rabbits and ferrets. I have looked for some kind of vitamin block or supplement for their water but can only find ferret related items when it comes to vitamins.
