Hi Everyone. I thought I would check on here before I bought a bag of this food. My two new degus are currently fed on Burgess Supa Guinea Excel pellets only. I changed their diet when I rehomed them as they were being fed another food by Burgess called Supa Guinea Mix and I found out this feed contains sugar cane molasses, which the whole feed is sprayed with molasses! I contacted Burgess Super Feeds by e-mail and they confirmed this. So my question is this: Does anyone feed Gerty Guinea Pig Mix to their degus and is this feed free of molasses and low in fat? If anyone can run down the ingredients list for me, that would be great. The reason I ask this, is having changed my degus diet to Excel, I would like to add some `mix` to the pellets, just to add texture and/or variety for the degus as they were used to a `mix` previously and I thought it might be a good idea to find a mix I could add to the pelleted feed! Thankyou in advance and although they don`t need anything added to the Excel diet, I just thought it would add interest for them.

Hi Meg. Thanks for telling me that! I used to buy Reggie Rat for my rats a while back. I`m just trying to get some feedback on whether Gerty food is widely used by degu owners. I really don`t have to use it because my two get everything they need from the Burgess Excel really and the Gerty was just to add a bit more fun to dinner times! So if anyone else can add to Meg`s post, please do.

I use Burgess Supa Rabbit (delux mix) in the light green bag not be confused with the one in the dark green bag which has molasses in it. As far as I can tell there is nothing in the Supa Rabbit mix that degus can't have and my two love it. I'm also in Scotland and I've only ever been able to get this in independent pet shops, the big chains only seem to carry the dark green version. Pets at Home do their own brand of chincilla mix you need to pick out the raisins but apart from that its a good one too. I stopped using rat food because of the poultry in it. Tried the Gerty Guinea Pig and they wouldn't touch it. Then again despite what all the advice mine won't touch chincilla pellets, I have the feeling Meg mentioned that her's were the same so its a case of finding what your two like.

Hi willow and thanks for your reply! I think I`ll just stick to using Burgess Excel biscuits for the time being because two people have now said that their degus won`t touch Gerty food. I suppose I could try a bag and it won`t break the bank, but I still need to know that it`s okay to feed to them? I agree with you about the rat mixes. They do contain poultry and locust bean pieces. I used to feed my three rats on two rat mixes, which is why I knew this. At least my two love their new Excel food and it`s something I can scource easily, or at least have it ordered in! Thanks for your input though.
