Do you guys have any recommendations on what kind of water bottle to get?
I tried the type that had a little metal ball at the end. I think I tried one when I only had the aquarium tank and I couldn't fasten it properly and they were constantly smacking it against the glass.
Then I tried one that was supposed to draw water to the end on the basis of gravity. Gravity failed me and I nearly killed my degus that way because they couldn't get water.
This prompted me to use a small bowl and fill it with water. Then I used two bowls to make sure there would be enough.

i bought a glass water bottle because my boys chewed a hole in the bottom of the plastic one. this glass bottle is made by lixit and is very high-quality. it comes with a spring fastener with clips on either end that you can attach to the bars of wire cages, and the spring goes around the bottle and holds it in place. because it stretches, it's very easy to remove and replace the bottle during refilling. it's also chew-proof!

I was able to use a plastic bottle. I had covered most of the original cage with hardware cloth ( resembles screen material but with bigger holes) when the babies were born because they fit right through the bars of the cage. I left most of the hardware cloth on the cage because it helps keep bedding, hay etc inside the cage. I cut a 1" square out of the hardware cloth and inserted the drinking tube, leaving the plastic bottle on the outside of their cage. The bottle is hung by a simple wire hanger that fits through the hardware cloth and hooks over the cage bars.
If I hadn't already modified the cage for the babies I would have used a glass water bottle too.

I have only used plastic bottles and at first had a awfull time keep them from chewing hole in it so I was left with all the tops with no bottoms. Now I use the old tops and use plastic pop bottles instead. and they have NEVER chewed them. I'm not sure why but possible the taste?? I have the metal tupe type tops with the ball also. I just keep a good eye on it (run my finger over it to make sure it works)
