Does anyone know if its safe to give degus broccoli to eat? Can you give them the florettes or just the stem? I can't find anything that tells me definitively either way.

I've notice a few people on other sites stating their Degus like broccoli. I don't give mine broccoli because I had read it could be gas forming for the little guys. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and all those related vegetables are not recommended foods for Degus.

I just started giving my degus Brocklie. I too heard that it would give them gas. But then I read someplace on here that a vet who specialies (excuse my spelling please) said that Alfalfa is bad. Timothy hay, Brocklie, carrots, green beans, asperagus, and I think it was celery is what you should give them. My girls love brocklie, green beans, and the carrots not crazy about asperagus and celery. Hope this helps you. I know what you mean when it comes to feeding there is so much conflicting advice. Good luck my friend. Kate

Conflict, conflict. I think you have to use a mix of common sense, experimantation and trusting your pet's judgement. Most of the time- outside dogs and cats, pets don't eat (I don't mean chew) things that will poison them or cause them harm. My logic dictates that if you give your degus cauliflower and or broccoli and it makes them gassy and uncomfortable, then the next time you offer it it will be turned down. My guys love both- and the leaves from both. For them broccoli and cauliflower are better than sunflower seeds. And this is a commonality among all twelve of my guys, so we're not talking about just one weird degu that likes cauliflower! The love kale and carrots, but they don't fight over them....but broccoli? Look out!
