It's with heavy hearts that we have decided to put our lone degu, Ernesto, up for adoption. He lost his brother Alberto a couple of months ago when the two of them picked up an infection. Sadly Albie was unable to fight it off but Ernie has made a full recovery. Although he's back to full fitness it's become clear to us that he isn't happy on his own and we are unable to give him the attention he needs and aren't able to take on any new friends for him at the moment.
We believe that Ernesto is between 1 & 2 years old - we adopted him from Pets at Home last August and they weren't able to give us any information about him. He's a lovely boy who deserves better grooming than our fingers can give him. If you are a degu owner near the Manchester area and would like to take him in please get in touch.
We adopted our Albie last year, unfortunately on his own as his brother had been attacking him and he was very timid. While he can get scared easily he's much more comfortable now, jumping up on our hands and pretending to be a parrot while I'm working (as in the pic)
I came across this post as I'm looking for a friend for him, is Ernesto still looking for a new home? We're based based fairly central to manchester (Hulme).
Hi everyone, we have a bit of a sad story as far as Ernie is concerned. We adopted another degu, Bowie, as a friend for Ernie. They were beginning to get on well but unfortunately Ernie had a recurrence of the illness which he & his brother had suffered from and he passed away last week. We assume it was a genetic deficiency as Bowie is completely unaffected.
As such, we now have Bowie up for adoption. He is a very friendly little gu who is happy to be handled. We have a choice of large & small cages he can come with as well as multiple wheels, snugglesafes etc which we are happy to give away. As mentioned above we are in Manchester but are willing to travel to find a nice new home for him if anyone is looking for a friend for their gu or an addition to their group.
Reading this make me so sad for you, I'm so sorry. We recently lost one of ours, Pippin, leaving his brother all alone. We're based in hull, but are happy to travel to adopt a friend for Otto. We love him very much, but can't offer the companionship he needs. He's not been the same since we lost Pip. We understand introducing to adults to each other isn't always a quick process, but we're prepared to do what it takes for our Otto.
I can confirm that there was a happy ending to this story as Bowie was adopted and settled with another degu. In fact it turned out that his new friend was actually a female and he became a dad!
