whether or not to avoid carbs depends on which kind you're talking about - simple or complex. simple carbs (like those in fruit and other sweet foods) are right out. complex carbs are only acceptable in high-fiber foods like grass and broccoli. low-fiber complex carbs, like cereal, are nearly as bad as simple carbs.

I really don't know sometimes this are raisins (if it's the thing I'm thinking about in polish ;p), chocolate cornflackes (I take it from him). I give him sometimes dry carrot. The big plus is that more than sweets he loves dry bread PLEASE tell me your not giving him chocolate cornflakes? (losing the will to live....)

a suitable food for degus should never contain chocolate anyway. If the food mix has chocolate in it, change to a better mix

Will someone wake me up when this lesson is over... I feel bad if I even feed my two degus an extra sunflower seed over their limit, yet here we are reading that certain members are feeding corn flakes that contain chocolate..... I mean....WHY??? Is it so hard to understand that degus live on a bland diet of guinea pig food and/or pellets, with the odd few sunflower and pumpkin seeds as a treat?!! Oh and not forgetting hay 24 hours a day whether they choose to nibble at it or not! My step father was diabetic (not injectable) and he only had to eat a little biscuit with a cup of tea when he felt faint. Otherwise, he controlled this with his diet, as we do for degus, although degus won`t get diabetes at all if fed the proper diet. So I would`nt confuse human diabetic needs with that of a degus.

and don't forget the water either!! there's too much chlorine in tap water for regular use with your degus and this can cause the same kind of effects that the wrong food can too - i found evian to contain the least chlorates..... so far per 2 litres.... it's only 4.5 chlorates...

I hate to disagree with you, but there is NO reason a degu should end up becomming diabetic! That is a grave error to assume. If they are correctly cared for, they can have a happy life that does not culminate in such a difficult health condition.

I think that it just takes a lot of effort on the owners part to make sure you do EVERYTHING you can to prevent your Degus from getting these diseases.
There are some diseases that may be unpreventable but it shouldnt mean that you just assume they will get a disease anyways. Thinking like that leads to people not caring about the diet they provide for their animal.
I think if you provide the right environment and the right diet for your degu that you kill off a large percentage of them being likely to develop any diseases.

I think I misunderstood your post a little.
However even if your degu develops a disease or a condition I dont think you should just accept it and let it play out or stop worrying about giving your degu a good diet.

I dont think Degus develop diabetes like we do, and it just happens, Degus have to be fed the wrong things to develop it.

even in human beings, there are 2 kinds of diabetes - the kind you are born with, and "adult-onset" diabetes, which develops as a result of poor diet and lack of exercise.
