Sorry, it was not another forum. I read it in "A Complete Pet Owners Mannual" for Degus (I know I had read it somewhere). I was quite surprised when I read it. (If you have this book it is on page 58). Good job I checked first. Thanks

I am really fed up with this now. I am not sure how much clearer I can make it. If you feed your degu fruit that contains sugar, as ALL fruit does, then you will kill your degu. Their natural diet does not include sugar, and therefore theid bodies are not adapted to be able to correct digest it. A build up of sugar in a degu's body will cause it to be come diabetic, and then eating sugar once diabetic will cause heart failure, stroke, and all other manner of horrible things. Its fairly simple really,
DONT FEED A DEGU SUGAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, degus are able to derive glucose from plenty of other sources besides sugary fruits and people-foods. in fact, plain cheerios are probably the sugariest food i would risk feeding a degu, as i'm sure they have a LITTLE bit of sugar in them to make them palettable for people. now, that all-bran stuff... i wouldn't be surprised if even degus turn that down. x___X

But do you think that person with diabetic cannot eat sugar? If so - you're wrong! ;p If you're diabetic you have pancreas insufficiency

nat, my father is diabetic, and no, he cannot have sugar. if he eats anything sugary or fatty, he has to give himself an insulin shot. and since we can't give degus insulin shots, we can't let them have sugary or fatty foods.

In Poland you can give them but it doesn't matter. I know fiew persons - diabetics. And they need sugar. If they will get tired they need to eat something sweet. That's why I'm wondering cause my degu is almost all the time in movement. And I wonder what will happen if his pancreas don't be able to produce more glucose cause it won't have any sources?

Nat - This is pointless. Why argue with us? If you don't agree, that's that. There's no way you will ever convince anyone here that it's ok to feed degus sugar. Have you ever been to degutopia.co.uk? There's lots of scientific papers on there that explain things better than I can, and Chloe who runs it is a scientist so she knows her stuff. No degu - Polish, English, Australian or American etc. should have sugar. Even for my rats, I limit their sugar intake to very little - there's only about 5 different cereals I will let them have as I consider most to be too sugary for them, and rats don't have the problems that degus have. People on here have had degus that have lived long, healthy lives - without sugar!! So why risk your degu's life and health by feeding it sugar??? You owe it to your degu to give it a healthy diet - which means no sugar. End of story.

Nat
My father is an injecting diabetic, and has been for the last 4 years following a serious collapse. If you are therefore saying that I am unaware of what being diabetic is, you are going to really start to annoy me!!! I also know from sad experience that if you feed a degu a regular amount of sugar, it will die. When I got my first degu Gizmo, we were told to give him a daily slice of Yam/Sweet potato. He died of heart failure at a year old. Hence the creation of the website and forum to prevent this happening to others.
As other people have also made this painfully clear, you really are continuing a POINTLESS conversation. 99% of the forum members are very aware that a degu CANNOT have sugar in its diet.
Are you telling us, that you are currently feeding your degu a certain amount of sugar? If so, I dont know how much clearer we can be in saying DONT.
Please stop trying to cause arguments with other forum members by continuing to post conflicting comments. I am all for active debate, for goodness sake I am a teacher, its a good form of learning. but when you are given clear facts and guidance, then you must accept when you are wrong.

I wonder what will happen if his pancreas don't be able to produce more glucose cause it won't have any sources? i've already explained that ALL animals can produce glucose from ANY food source, whether the food has sugar or not. protein, carbohydrates, dairy, vegetables, fiber, all can be broken down into glucose. how else to you explain the ability of herbivorous animals to continue thriving? cows don't eat sugar and yet they do just fine. degus are the same way - the glucose they need is all produced from sugar-free, fat-free, high-fiber foods like the grass and weeds they would eat in the wild.

OOOOOOOO. So all the time you was saying "suger" by meaning sweet things. I meand all sugers, fructose, sacharose etc. That's why I wanted to know why do you keep telling all the time thet they cannot eat sugar while they are eating it all the time Still I think that more active degu will be able to use more glucose. But it's only my biological point of view
