Earlier, they got into a pretty aggressive squabble over treats. I gave them an egg carton with some puffed rice inside to see if they could figure out how to get inside. It didn't take long to crack it, however once Finn got through he became much more defensive over it than he normally does over food. Lots of angry noises, jumping and kicking from them both. I took the egg carton away to calm them down. They've been carrying on as normal since then, just as affectionate with each other as they always are. I've noticed that Finn's right eye isn't fully open though. He hasn't slowed down at all, and he isn't behaving any different to normal, so I'm not sure if there's any real concern here. It's only when he's still. His eye isn't weeping or anything, but he is blinking that eye. Should I just keep checking up on it for now?

From what you describe, he might have been hit around the eye, or it could be a scratch to the eye itself. Given it's the eye, I would get it checked out. If it's a scratch to the eye, it's prone to infection with longer term consequences. It will likely mean a course of eye drops. If he's just been given a black eye, then no harm done.

How is the eye today?
It's probably best to offer them each their own stuffed egg box or anything exciting like that, most degus really do not like to share the good stuff!

Yeah that was my mistake. It's a large box so I thought they'd not fight. I'll try smaller ones next time, and instead of rice and oats I'll use a hazelnut.
The good news is his eye is looking much better. He's still blinking it a little but it's pretty much all the way open. I think a good night's sleep was all he needed.
