Woo-hoo! How awesome! Congratulation! Boy, do I know what you mean about trying to get pictures - little Rudy does the same thing...darts out for a moment, but before I can raise the camera in positon ZIP right back inside again, lol! I cheated finally this weekend and lifted up the box for a moment to I could snap a couple shots. It'll be 1 week on Wednesday!

Congrats- my brood is driving me bananas! This morning at 5 AM my husband and I heard a peeping noise in our room. As parents we both woke quickly. The babies (all 6 of them) have learned how to get out of the cage between the bars- but they've never done it at night or the wee hours. They're only 2 1/2 weeks old!!! so my husband and I crept out of bed and spent the next 45 mins on all fours trying to find the little wretch!!! He kept moving....exploring at his leisure! We finally caught him under the couch and played the game of back and forth. We managed to wire up most of the cage, so they can't get out, but this morning-before I went back to bed- I resorted to masking tape (which they don't like because it grabs their whiskers <triumphant grin>) because I am horribly afraid of finding an adorable little CORPSE somewhere in a cupboard or under a cushion . It's actually quite funny- nobody has escaped in hours now, and whenever the adults climb the third of the cage that is taped all I hear is stick-stick-stick-stick. Another positive is that they leave it alone because they don't like the taste or the fact that it will stick to their noses!!! Desperation can have funny results.

I found CDs and CD cases the best! If fixed to the outside of the cage, it keeps the little boggers in and the others cant chew it! Great! ;D Aimee

Hahahahhaahahhahahhaha! But you know what? One of them managed to get through somehow! He must have climbed up onto the ceiling and squeezed through there because there is simply no other way he could have gotten out. And getting out is bad- because we just moved two weeks ago, are having renovations done, an have vaious spots along the floor where there are holes.....(cute little corpses in the walls-loverly). So I have done the unthinkable- I have put the babies in a cage IN the cage.
I put the top of a hamster cage only to corral the critters....only as I've been writing this THEY GOT OUT! Grrrr. So I put the bottom on too, and now they are well, and truly trapped. SO when I'm at home I'll let Mom in every 1 1/2 hours and at night and when I go out they all get to pile in there and snooze. Deep fried degu because they've been chewing on exposed wires is just not good. And, actually, with the state of Mom's health it may be a good thing for them to be in there and eating more greens and hay and weaning a bit, seeing as it seems to be that only my vile concoction is keeping her going.
You know, she's huge (the Mom). Almost the size of a chinchilla, but she isn't that heavy- I think she's bloated. She's improved markedly since she came into my ownership (3 weeks ago), but I think the damage was done a long time ago and over a long time. Active diabetes and slow liver failure are my diagnoses. I will be very sad when she dies, but I will be even sadder if I can't keep her going to the babies' 4 week mark and all 7 of them die. 10 more days, just 10 more days. This is the strongest witch's brew I've ever put together for an animal too:
-concentrated oil of oregano:10 drops -bee propolis (the stuff they sterilize the mouth of the honeycomb with- very good for remediating orafices like mouths and eyes and ears-instantly [and uncomfortably] disinfects): 8 drops -chlorophyll juice: a capful -2 tbsp blueberry juice
And it's evil tasting! I have to give it to her with milk(milk first, then 2 drops and repeated 4 times) so it doesn't burn too much, even though I know the lactose is bad for her. So she's on a strict diet outside of that with next to no carbs and 0 sugar. Poop- what am I going to do?
Sorry if I bummed out our thread- just wish I could do more......hee hee I hear the outraged cries of corralled baby degus!!!!!!!!!!!!!
