Hi Everybody and Merry Christmas!. I`ve posted this under health because in a way, it affects the health and wellbeing of a degu pair.
For a while now, I have considered seperating my male and female, who came to me as a pair that the previous owner would`nt split and would`nt rehome them unless they stayed together. So perhaps stupidly, I still agreed to have them.
Four plus months on, they are still together and on two occassions, I have taken away the female in an attempt to split them and I can`t do it because the male seems so unsettled and the female goes all quiet initially. This is tearing me apart because the male does chase her around on occassion and she fends him off, but the last thing I need is a litter of babies....
She has (according to the previous owner) only had one litter well over a year and a half ago and nothing since and still has`nt fell pregnant to her male, Cheech.
I nearly had a great new home for the female to go to early next week, but have had to cancel this due to the fact that I thought I was breaking the hearts of a bonded pair. I just can`t do that to them. They do love each other and had it been any other species of rodent, splitting them up would have been easier to do, I`m sure.
They will stay together now and I won`t be attempting to split them again because I fear I would be causing both degus to go downhill due to grief and that would break my heart. I`m not really looking for suggestions here because I`ve made my mind up to leave them together for life now, but would be interested to hear others advice and stories on this issue?
