How cold is too cold for a single degu? I have one at the house and we always keep it cold during the winter. Any thoughts on keeping her warmer? She's in a 10 gallong aquarium with a cage topper. So, she has an area to go to that stays a bit warmer.

I know that Degus are very adapt to the cold, in the wild they are used to it, but i presume now they are in captivity they might not be so used to it. I think as long as there not outside they should be ok. I would normaly say that they cuddle up to keep warm, but with your single Degu if you give her plenty of bedding she will be fine.

my degus have a fluffy bed they can sleep in, and i'm going to try and make them a fleece tube as well. that should suffice for keeping them warm.

I was under the impression they prefered temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. But actual highs and lows?

In the wild the degu habitat ranges from the coastal desert area to the mountains. So varying temperatures are no problem to them. However, in captivity this has become more of an issue, in that they do not like temperatures that vary greatly from night to day. They also do not fair well in drafts or direct sunlight, although they like a patch of the cage in sunlight so they can sunbathe, they need to be able to find shade whenever. During the winter they need to be away from drafts such as open windows or doors, and kept at a stable temp. this is relatively easy with centrally heated houses these days.
The main issue it to make sure they are provided with plenty of bedding and that this is kept fresh and clean for them.

My Degu cage is sitting on a table top in front of a Southern facing window. The sunshine falls such that the girls can choose to sit in the sun or move to a shaded area of their cage. The room temperature is much the same as the rest of the house - 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I was thinking about my earlier post - I don't take the girls outside when the temperatures drop below 60.

Sounds like they have it comfy then! Degus love to sunbathe, but can get too hot. you will notice their little ears go red!! If they have sun on the cage, being able to find shade is vital! Sounds like your girls are very happy!
