I came home to my degus this evening, and found that the bedding had blood on it. It wasnt very much, and seemed quite watered down, but I am still worried. Does anyone have any advice, keeping in mind that as I write this it is midnight on Saturday, and the vets dont open again until monday! I will of course take them for a check up if there is fresh blood between now and monday, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to the cause.
I dont think its from fighting, as I checked them all out and couldnt find any scratches, its the fact that its quite watered down blood that has me worried.

Hi Meg I saw your post before I went to bed last night and spent all night thinking about it as I can imagine how worried you must be I can't remember whether you've got boys and girls together, but is it possible one of them could have been pregnant and miscarried? Animals (even veggie ones) have been known to sometimes eat a miscarriage (yuk! gross!) and the watery blood could have been from the birth maybe? In humans and other mammals a water infection causes blood in the urine, but I would have thought that as degus concentrate their urine then the blood wouldn't have looked watery - but I don't know, I'm only guessing. I really hope everything will be ok. Good luck, Roz

they are all males, so I can rule out the female related issues. Since last night I havent noticed any more blood, and have been keeping a close eye on them. I am wondering if it could be kidney issues, particuarly for the elderly degu gromit? Does anyone have any ideas?

If the blood looks watered down it does sound like its from one end or the other. If it is from his mouth mabye its his teeth? Or if its from the other end a maybe sounds more like a water works issue? Hope you get on allright at the vets and let us know how he gets on:)
